Police in South Africa are looking for the answer after the bodies of three policemen were found in the river (having been missing for six days).
Boipelo Senoge, 20, left a gas station near Johannesburg last Wednesday, Boipelo Senoge, 20, Cebekhulu Linda, 24, and Keamogetswe Buys, 30.
Their bodies were the bodies of divers found about 70 kilometers (43 miles) away from the Hennops River, as well as the remains of two other unnamed people.
Police initially said they were investigating a case of "possible hijacking and kidnapping" but said Tuesday they could not speculate whether the death was accidental.
The police statement said the three policemen - all officers - were traveling in the white mass ball when they disappeared.
Since then, their vehicle tracking devices and phones have been turned off.
National Police Commissioner Fanie Masemola said that a search team then "studied sleepless nights, combing through the length and breadth of Gauteng, Liberty and Limpopo provinces" and eventually found a portion of the vehicle."
Then a Renault kangaroo van was found near the bank of the Hennops River in Centurion City.
When they disappeared, the three officers were traveling from Liberty State to Limpopo.
Divers searched that part of the river and recovered five bodies between Monday and Tuesday.
Divers, together with three officers, found the body of a police administrator who had not been named. General Masemora said the clerk had been driving the Renault van.
He added that the fifth corpse had been broken down and had not been confirmed.
Police are still looking for mass polo for police travel.
The search for missing police has been closely followed by South African public, and prayers for three officers have been circulating on social media.
After the body was found, relatives who suffered disaster gathered on the bank of the Hennops River with candles.
"We don't want to speculate at this stage what caused these bodies to be found in this river, whether it is an accident, our investigation will reveal once we have found their vehicles."
This marked a significant change in the tone from Sunday when the Commissioner said: "We cannot undermine the authority of the state by kidnapping three policemen. It's just a harsh warning to the people behind this incident, either you hand over yourself to yourself or we do it ourselves."
