A Smokey Robinson lawyer on Wednesday claimed the sexual assault allegations against Motown Legend False and said the singer “You really have the control of me” will respond in the coming days.
Four former housekeepers of Robinson accused him of sexual assault on them in a lawsuit filed on Tuesday, which has been said to have lasted for years. The lawsuit seeks no less than $50 million in damages.
Robinson's attorney Christopher Frost said in a statement late Wednesday that the lawsuit "is just an ugly way to try to draw money from the 85-year-old American idol."
"Through this process, we see the strange drama of yesterday's press conference, as the plaintiff's lawyer outlines the evil evil, false allegations against the Robinsons, attempting to treat the public as uninformed participants in the media circus, who attempt to create the media circus," Frost said in a statement.
Frost also said: "As time goes by, Mr. Robinson will respond in his own words."
The lawsuit filed against Robinson in the Los Angeles County Superior Court alleges that the attacks mostly occurred at Robinson’s home near Los Angeles, far northwest of the city.
The woman who filed the lawsuit was identified as Jane 1-4 in the lawsuit. Three of them appeared in a quarter of them wearing masks at a press conference in Los Angeles on Tuesday.
One of their attorneys, John Harris, said at that event that the women were “hispanic women who were hired as housekeepers and who were paid less than the minimum wage.”
"Because low-wage workers are in a vulnerable position, they lack the resources and options to protect themselves," Harris said.
From May 2014 to February 2020, Robinson attacked at least one woman, usually in a place where there were no security cameras in his home, the lawsuit said.
The lawsuit says he beat another former employee at least 20 times during his 12 years working for him in 2012. According to the suit, Robinson will force her into his bedroom and perform a "ritual" to get his bathroom out of naked or nearly naked.
According to the lawsuit, Robinson then placed a towel on the bed to prevent the linen from being dirty “because of what is going to happen.”
The lawsuit says he did the same thing with the other two plaintiffs. A former butler worked at Robinson for 13 months, during which time he attacked her at least seven times.
All plaintiffs accuse Robinson of his wife, Frances Robinson, also known as the defendant, who perpetuates the hostile working environment by screaming at them and using racially derogatory language.
Robinson was a pioneer of Motown Records, founded the vocal group The Miracles in the 1950s, later released albums as a solo artist and served as the brand’s record director. In 1987, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Robinson's attorney Frost said they would seek to dismiss the lawsuit. He also criticized women's lawyers at a press conference, saying they "gone beyond freedom, even in this case, even attorneys allow lawyers."
"We will say more on this issue because we strongly defend our clients from these false allegations and work to protect their good names," Frost said.
