"Cardinal George of Chicago was one of my great mentors, and he said, "Look, there will be no American pope until the United States falls into political decline." His view is that if America is operating politically, culturally, and economically, they do not want American religion to rule the world.

But this trend was reversed Thursday, with Prefoster's name recurring in gossip as the pope's role in the lead contender.

He is undoubtedly qualified because the only clear qualification of the Pope’s role is that the candidates are male and Roman Catholic. But, most importantly, only more than two-thirds of voter cardinal voters need support, not just qualifications.

Originally in Chicago, Prevost has been the head of the dicastery of the church bishop. A strong position means he oversaw the choice of the new bishop.

For any cardinal voter who may be closed by Prevost's U.S. nationality, this is not his only one. He is a dual citizen, with nationality in the United States and Peru, where he served for many years.

Although overall Prest is seen as a centrist, he is considered progressive on certain key social issues. He has long championed marginalized groups, like Francis, who championed immigrants and the poor.

But, like Pope Francis, natives in Illinois opposed women as deacons, so at this point he was considered a conservative in the church doctrine.
