'The Favorite' author talks TV adaptation, possible sequels and inspiration

In the world of ice dancing, anything is possible. That's the tone and story that Ryan Fargo sets out to tell in her latest novel, "The Favorite," which has become a trending topic on social media since its release in January.

According to the book's description, "To the world, they were a scandal. To each other, an obsession. An epic love story set against the backdrop of the glittering, brutal realm of elite figure skating , the protagonist is a woman determined to carve her own path on and off the ice.”

The Favorite is told through multiple storylines - both from the perspective of Katarina Shaw, who fell in love with Heath Rocha as a child and began her Olympic journey; others recount the journey through an unauthorized documentary celebrating the tenth anniversary of Shaw and Rocha's last skate.

“This is a book I wrote for myself about something I’m obsessed with,” said Fargo, a longtime watcher of figure skating competitions on television and a devoted fan of “Wuthering Heights.” When she started, she was working on two different books—one a gothic romance novel, the other a thriller about ice dancers. "Both didn't work, and I just kept bouncing back and forth. Finally, I had the idea of merging them together and turning it into a retelling of Wuthering Heights...I'd been working on it for a number of years, and then just It’s like this magical process.”

From there, she started doing more research, from reading skater memoirs to looking through the archives of the official magazine of U.S. Figure Skating. She searched for every detail, even the dates and locations mentioned in the book, to match the actual dates in history.

While the characters in the book are not based on real-life characters in "Fargo," they are "a composite of famous skaters."

"Kat is largely based on Katarina Witt, a German skater who I grew up watching and was always fascinated by; she was so bold and sexy," Fargo said. "The Hayashi family was partly inspired by the Shibuya siblings, who are so adorable. I hope they don't think I think they're as calculating as Bella. They look like a couple. I always enjoy watching them play and they It’s a team of brothers who are really rising in the ranks.”

While the Lin family lineage is mentioned in the book, Heath's background is not - and that's on purpose.

"As this is a retelling of Wuthering Heights and Heathcliff never knows where he comes from, and it's a matter of debate even now, I wanted to keep it mysterious because I think it's very telling to his character. Key," she said. "He had no identity of his own, so he tried to create one through his love for another person. He was attached to her out of trauma."

The Favorite has released a promotional video trailer, as well as an audiobook featuring an A-list voice cast that also includes former skater Johnny Weir. Will was Fargo's idea - an idea she thought was "totally delusional," but she threw it out there because the character he read was based on him.

With early buzz, it's impossible no Ask about the adaptation - especially since Fargo mentions some of the meetings in the book's acknowledgments. While tight-lipped on any details, she confirmed it had been optioned, a producer had been hired and they were shopping it to the streamer. TV shows are more popular than movies because there are so many stories to tell.

Fargo also has a dream in mind that she's not afraid to share because she wants to make it happen: Brandon Perea as Shis.

"I think he would be perfect. He has a background in jam skating, which will translate onto the ice," she said of the 29-year-old actor, whose credits include "The OA" and "Twisters." Apart from this, the team also discussed casting unknown actors to bring new young actors into the limelight.

With a potential TV show, there could be multiple seasons. But that doesn't mean she's now considering a sequel.

"I don't think there's a sequel. If there is, it's probably many years later," Fargo said. “I am very much in favor of the discussion currently taking place in our sport about having same-sex teams compete. These skaters Madison Hubbell and Gabriella Papadakis put on a show together with gorgeous, heart-wrenching choreography. It’s unbelievable. If I were to write anything set in the world of skating, it would be about two women skating together. I would love to see it in real life before writing it into fiction.”
