The creator of the modern Tequila sunrise was transformed and popularized in the 1970s at the Sausalito Bar and has passed away.
Robert "Bobby" Lozoff, a long-time bartender at Trident, is a famous bar, music venue and restaurant for many celebrities, who died in Hawaii earlier this month for an unknown career. He is 77 years old.
Lozoff's death was reported by the Marin Independent Journal. Columnist Jeff Burkhart said Lozoff's long-time friends confirmed his death.
Based on the historic patches, Lozoff and a joint reveler Billy Rice created the "most famous and most popular version of Tequila sunrise."
As the story progressed, Lozoff provided drinks to members of the Rolling Stones in 1972, when the band attended the party in Trident.
This is an immediate blow.
"I poured the (band member) the sunrise of the tequila and you can see the light in his mind. Bingo. You don't need a bartender to travel with you, just buy a bottle of Mexican coffee, a bottle of orange juice and the Grenadine," Lozoff recalled in 2016.
In some versions of the story, Lozoff first gave the drink to Mick Jagger. In addition, it is Keith Richards. Either way, the band members loved it and joined them in tequila, orange juice and Grenadine drinks, quickly gaining popularity of the combination. The Marin History Museum plaque says their 1972 tour will be called the cocaine and tequila tour and spread drinks “all over the globe.”
According to Ice Tea Magazine, an earlier version of the Tequila Sunrise was said to have been created in the 1930s or 1940s at the Arizona Biltmore Hotel, using tequila, soda, lime juice and Créme De Cassis - according to the Ice Cream Magazine. But Lozoff and Rice create the more common tequila sunrise today, using orange juice and Grenadine to produce beach, ombré effect.
"I've had a lot of luck over the years, and he's not interested in his cocktail legacy, which is the opposite of how these things usually work," Burkhart wrote in his column. But Lozoff has very good memories of the Trident's work, he said.
"It's an interesting moment and I don't regret it," Lozoff told Berkhart in 2012.
According to Trident, here is the recipe for tequila Sunrise from Lozoff:
1 Part Jose Cuervo Special Silver
2 servings of orange juice
1 teaspoon Grenadine
The recipe starts from there and says: "Pop tequila and orange juice onto the ice and pour it onto the ice. Then, slowly pour it into the Grenadine. Enjoy the way the Rolling Stones approved."
