From the moment the Chicago Bears drafted offensive tackle Darnell Wright, the No. 10 draft pick in the 2023 NFL draft, he has been the team's staunch tackle on right tackle. The Huge Protectors have started 33 Bears games over the past two seasons, dealing with the constant restructuring next to him next to him. But, as Wright is ready to enter third grade, can he still be reorganized along the offensive route? This is possible, according to Bears head coach Ben Johnson.
After Wednesday’s OTA practice, Johnson met with the media at Halas Hall and discussed the ongoing competition in various places on offense and defense. The head coach was asked about the offensive line, with rookie Ozzy Trapilo and sophomore lineman Kiran Amegadjie currently spinning in the starting left tackle game, while Braxton Jones continues to recover from an ankle injury last year.
"We're moving. We want to give everyone a chance," Johnson said. "Danel, we're comfortable putting him on the right now, so on the left until we reintegrate Braxton into it, which will be some musical chairs."
Johnson said they like Wright’s right side online, but the Bears still have the chance to choose to move him to the left. "To be sure." Johnson said firmly when asked if the correct tackle was solidified with Wright. "The tables are all on the tables and we're going to let the plan work, that is to leave them there for the time being and have these guys fight against them on the left. We can decide to change the route if needed."
Based on what the Bears have shown on the scene so far, coupled with Johnson’s comments, their top plans include working on left tackles at Trapilo and Amegadjie before entering training camp before Jones returns. It turns out that Wright is a reliable right tackle and another position change is made in this regard when a new starter in all five positions may not be the possibility of a young quarterback like Caleb Williams or Wright may not be the ideal solution.
Trapilo and Amegadjie are both Day 2 draft picks and their expectations are still high. Amegadejie's rookie year had limited movements and poor grades, while Trapilo's figure and skills showed hope, although he played on the right side primarily during college. Jones has been a starter for each of the last three seasons, but his injury reveals the possibility of a change as the Bears hope to find the best five games to improve the league's maximum 68 sacks allowed in 2024.
There is a long way to go before solidifying any position, but all signs are showing that Wright remains on the right tackle. However, Johnson has been open and it sounds like he is willing to make changes when the situation is right.
