When creator Mike White moved the White Lotus to the fictional White Lotus health resort in Southeast Asia and Thailand, the third season became by far the most challenging for image editing and sound, whether it was the demands of the location or the desire not to simply repeat their own wishes.
In each season, the setting effectively becomes a character in the show.
Editor John M. Valerio said: “We made a conscious effort to make it feel very different and respect what Thailand is and how the location speaks to the story and the characters.”
Re-recorded mixer Christian Minkler noted that Thailand’s uniqueness (the first few seasons were set in Hawaii and Italy) brought his own considerations for soundscapes, which included creating a rich world and supporting narratives.
"The sound of the jungle is continuous," he said. "We were able to use bugs and noise as design elements, but also for (transition vehicles). It happens in almost every episode. It's very useful for a practical mix of art and a whole season."
A more practical element is that many scenes are shot with noisy air conditioners due to the heat. “The challenge is to (create) a natural atmosphere and then be on site, generators and air conditioners.”
Muay Thai or Thai Boxing becomes the storytelling device for the penultimate episode, titled "Killer Instinct." They have videos of the second unit, where some characters participate in Thai-style battles (Valerio) said it was a "style runner" involving plots that each character confronted each other. These include Rick (Walton Goggins) vs. Jim (Scott Glenn) – the White Lotus Master and the man Rick believes to kill his father – and spa manager Belinda (Natasha Roswell) gets an claim from Greg (Jon Gris) who believes she has been involved in the second season of his wife’s death.
“Usually in the show, we use the environment as a transitional exclamation point to the scene of the tone we see,” Valerio said, explaining how the “Muay Thai b-Roll” intertwined with “every little confrontation we see is embellished and accented.”
For example, when Jim and Rick sit down and talk, the fighter warms up. "Then Rick told Jim, 'Let's go out in the study and let's talk about something." Then, we saw the gloves hit.
"The sound of[the battle]is made, but it allows us to do anything as we need to design."
The season culminates with a 90-minute finale, titled "Amor Fati" (Latin, meaning "Love of Fate"), which requires packaging the storyline of each character edited by Valerio and Scott Turner and working closely with White. To keep the plot to 90 minutes (at one point two hours), Valerio describes how they focus on the conclusion of the characters’ stories most needed, including cutting scenes between college student Piper (Sarah Catherine Hook) (Sarah Catherine Hook) and Belinda’s visiting son Zion (Nicholas Duvernay).
"They decided to go out and lose their virginity. (But) it felt like Piper's storyline had fallen into the breakfast conversation," during which she told her parents in tears that she had learned something about herself and chose not to study in a monastery in Thailand. "And then, it's just looking at each scene and then peeling it off."
