Texas woman asks others to join her in 'Dry January', but fails miserably

Like many Americans, Harley Hurosky of Texas decided to join the Alcohol Free Month movement and give up alcohol for a month after drinking too much during the holidays.

"Eating too much and drinking too much over the holidays made me feel bad," Harley told Fox News Digital. "So, I thought it would be smart to start the new year with the goal of feeling better physically. "

Hurowsky, who lives in Houston, hopes she can build a circle of supporters who will not only encourage her but also spend her sobriety vacation with her. That didn't quite happen.

Could more drinkers be switching to no- and low-alcohol drinks due to cancer concerns?

"Of course, I think my friends and family will rally around me and add moral support," Huroski said. “It turns out the only thing they’re committed to is sitting comfortably on the sidelines with a cocktail.”

Hurowski decided to record the reactions of the people she asked and post their answers on social media. (See the video at the top of this article.)

"My parents were on the list because, well, they were reliable on the phone and because I thought their reactions would be interesting, which they absolutely were," she said.

"I fully expect that most of my loved ones will easily answer 'no,' especially since asking them to abstain from alcohol for a full month feels like a bold move," Huroski said. "But their reaction - whether it was rejection or laughter - is what makes this video so funny."

As of earlier this weekend, the viral video had been viewed more than 743,000 times on TikTok.

Hurosky, a marketing manager, said she enjoys posting on social media.

"Honestly, I just love the process. It's so fun to create and share moments that make people smile or laugh," she said. “My content usually focuses on relatable, interesting situations because that’s how I connect with people.”

Huroski said most of the people she asked "are very social and travel a lot," so she expected some hilarious reactions.

"That's exactly why I record all my FaceTime videos," she continued. "What I didn't expect was that the funniest reactions would come from my parents. My dad, who is as goofy as I am, absolutely stole the show. I'm sorry to doubt you, Dad. You really did it."

Huroski believes she can make it through January without drinking.

"This is not my first time doing 'Dry January.' My boyfriend and I successfully completed it last year," she told Fox News Digital.

“The goal is to lose a few pounds and start living a healthier lifestyle.”

Huroski said that while they were able to reduce their liquid calorie intake last year, the couple "probably overcompensated with takeout and restaurant meals...the calories we saved by not drinking cocktails may have been channeled through our delivery orders Back again."

But she noticed there were other benefits to quitting drinking.

"We definitely feel less groggy and enjoying life without the horrible hangover," Hroski said.

"Dry January doesn't suit their vibe very well."

“Also, we proved to ourselves that we could stick to the challenge and go an entire month without drinking, so I think that was a win overall.”

Ultimately, Hurosky said she wasn't surprised by the rejections from friends and family this year.
