Texas Tech overcame Oklahoma dynasty to enter WCWS finals

Oklahoma City - Oklahoma State's four-game winning streak for women's college world champions ended when Lauren Allred's strike sacrifice flight scored a 3-2 victory in the semifinal Monday night.

Coach Patty Gasso's Patty Gasso (52-9) was in the final strike of the seventh inning when Abigale Dayton summoned some magic to hit two matches of Red Raiders Ace Nijaree Canady. That was just her third long goal this season.

But the Red Raiders (53-12) responded quickly in the second half. Mihyia Davis beat one, while Hailey Toney twice. Allred hit the right field and Sydney Barker had a wide shot range, allowing Davis to score easily.

"Congratulations to Texas Tech," Gaso said. "They won. They all performed well. They played well. They pitched well. Well deserved."

Texas Tech coach Gerry Glasco tells him about telling his team to refocus after giving up the lead.

"We don't want it to be easy," he said. "It's Oklahoma State. You know it's not easy. Let's go here to work and win this win at the bottom of the seventh inning."

Texas Tech will play for Texas in the three-game championship series that begins Wednesday during the first trip to WCWS. The Longhorns have reached the finals for the third time in the past four years. They lost to Oklahoma in 2022 and 2024.

Sam Landry, the No. 1 pick in the athlete’s unlimited softball league draft, won the game’s losses. Glasco was coaching in Landry, Louisiana last season, with Elder and Davis following Glasco from Louisiana to Texas Tech.

After the game, Glasco and Landry accepted it.

"It's bittersweet," Landry said. "I hope he's lucky.

Canady lost the suspension but won. She is the two-time National Fastpitch Coaching Association pitcher of the year and was the American softball college player of the year last season. She previously signed a name, image and similar deal at Stanford, worth over $1 million.

After leading Stanford to the semifinals two years ago, Canada reached her first final.

"I think people doubt us, don't think we'll get to that," she said. "I think we just don't have any pressure on us, just want to play softball."

Oklahoma State won nine consecutive knockouts, but the Sooners lost the core of the team that won the previous championship. There are 9 freshmen in their lineup, with only three seniors.

For those who are quick, the future looks bright.

"As one of the top three teams left, we stood in the World Series, with a team of 14 new immigrants, I just shared with them in the locker room the fun of me coaching them with them, watching them grow, watching them hungry, watching them never quit."
