Texas man executed for holding a fire at a gas station 13 years ago

A Texas man was executed for 13 years Tuesday night when he brutally killed a beloved grandma while firing at a gas station.

Matthew Johnson, 49, was convicted of heinous murder for Nancy Harris, 76, a gas station clerk who dipped him in lighter liquid and caught fire in a 2012 robbery in Garland, Texas.

He was pronounced dead at 6:53 pm after his final statement.

"First of all, I want to give praise to God. If it weren't for him, I wouldn't be on the earth. I thank him for his life." "For Mrs. Harris' family, when I looked at each of you, I saw her that day. I just asked for forgiveness from all of you. I never wanted to hurt her. I pray that she was the first person I saw when I opened my eyes and that I would be with her."

Johnson continued to apologize to his wife and children and admitted his misconduct, saying, “I made the wrong choice, I made the wrong decision, and now I have paid the consequences.”

He spoke to his death row prisoners and told them, "I love you, you all go on. Jesus is the way of brothers, He is the only way."

Johnson was 36 years old when the fatal attack was attacked.

The fatal attack happened to happen 13 years ago, on May 20, 2012. Court documents obtained by the Associated Press show Johnson walked into the convenience store Harris was working with a bottle of lighter liquid and a bottle of wine lighter.

Johnson then walked behind the counter, stole cigarettes, lighters and cash from the register, and poured the lighter liquid on Harris and caught fire before leaving the store, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice said.

He was arrested nearly an hour after the attack, according to court documents obtained by the Associated Press.

Officials said Harris worked at a gas station for more than a decade and died five days after the attack, but was able to describe Johnson before his death.

The Associated Press reported in a 2013 trial that Johnson admitted to catching Harris on fire, expressed remorse and called himself "the lowest scum on Earth."

"I hurt an innocent woman. I took a person's life. I'm the reason. It's not my intention - kill her or hurt her, but I did."

Johnson testified during the sentencing that he had been affected by drugs and alcohol during the robbery, claiming that the lighter liquid was just to scare Harris, who had no intention of killing her.

Johnson tried to appeal his death penalty, but his attempt failed.
