How does New Houston Texans offensive coordinator Nick Caley feel?
Asked his young receiver during his first practice working with a long-time tight coach.
“He’s great,” rookie Jayden Higgins said Friday afternoon. “He is sending a lot of momentum and it’s really just showing how excited he is about this season, and it’s really just coming in and learning all the new things they have to install. Then (wide receiver/offensive pass coordinator) coach Ben (McDaniels) is also good. It’s really a lot of installations, we’ve done a lot of installations and we’ve been playing the script all the time.
Caley, who previously served as the Los Angeles Rams' pass game coordinator, was hired to help Houston's offense overcome the legitimate strength of the AFC. After his return with CJ Stroud, his mission is to take over Bobby Slowik.
Stroud has the key to everything. As a rookie, he looked like the next All-Pro, throwing over 4,000 yards while leading the Texans to their first playoffs in four years. A year later, he was fired 52 times, the second largest pedestrian number in the NFL.
Kaley's main goal in Houston will be to fix the offensive line with the former starter and young talented actors. Houston's best lineman for 2024 is Pro Bowl left tackle Laremy Tunsil. He is now heading to Washington to protect 2024 offensive rookie Jayden Daniels, while the Texans will turn to veteran Cam Robinson or second-round draft pick Aireontae Ersery.
Ersery, a three-year starter in Minnesota and a big choice for all, said the first thing he did to his new playmaker was his personality and attitude toward his coach.
“Two interesting people know a lot about the ball,” Elsari said of Kali and new offensive line coach Cole Popovich. "They are humans, not robots. They are not there trying to teach you like robots. If there is a bug or something, they will stop and slow down to fix and work from there."
Texans coach Demeco Ryans also mentioned that Caley has no switches. When he goes to work, it is 100% or bust.
"I like the positive energy he brings, the smile, the joy he brings every day," Ryans said. "It rubs on the players.
“I know he will do a great job of leading the ball.”
The Texans will return to the driving range next week to start the veterans mini-training camp.
