Syracuse, N.Y. - Members of a high school hockey program in upstate New York, New York, were accused of armed kidnapping of young players in stunts, "out of danger." Prosecutors said this week.
Orndaga County District Attorney Bill Fitzpatrick said Tuesday night that at least 11 people are believed to be involved in activities related to Westhill High School in the suburbs of Syracuse. Those who surrendered Thursday would only face low-level misdemeanor charges, he said.
Fitzpatrick said the group was part of a “trick” that involved in inviting young players to watch the game and then going to McDonald’s. However, one player was tied up, blindfolded and placed in the trunk of the car.
“I can’t fully express the level of stupidity and lack of judgment to this community,” Fitzpatrick said. “It’s beyond danger.”
Fitzpatrick said a young player on a man driving team pretended to be lost and stopped in a remote area, while other participants were waiting in the woods, armed with at least a knife and a weapon that appeared to be a gun.
That was when the students initiated fake kidnapping.
Fitzpatrick said there were at least five alleged victims in the stunt, but some managed to escape.
The man who had not escaped had his hands tied up and put some hoods on his head. He was taken to believe he would be abandoned, but eventually returned to his hometown. While students are not physically harmed, it will be long-term, Fitzpatrick said. ”
"It's not to light a bag on Halloween and stick it in the driveway, it's a crime," he said, adding that if the police encounter the scene and see "a child wearing a hooded child being kidnapped at the muzzle."
The incidents were captured in the video, and Fitzpatrick said the local sheriff’s office identified 11 people — some of whom were over 18 — who believed they were involved directly or indirectly.
When asked if they were all members of the boys’ hockey team, Fitzpatrick said “it looks like that, but I don’t know.” He noted that the district’s principal canceled the rest of the college season.
Prosecutors said Tuesday that in the message to the relevant personnel, if they hand over themselves within 48 hours, they will receive a misdemeanor of illegal jail.
"It is very likely that your case will be handled in the family court, and if it cannot be handled in the family court due to your age, you will end this without a criminal conviction and criminal record," he said. "It's a one-time, 48-hour offer."
Those who do not submit will face felony charges.
In a letter to the student’s parents, he said: “Don’t cry at me two weeks from now on, ‘You accused my little baby of kidnapping.’ Yes, most of my prosecutors can win cases on the tape.”
News of seeking comments was left to Westhill School District principal Steve Dunham.
"Our priority is always the physical safety, mental health and well-being of our students," he said in a statement to Syracuse.com earlier this week, "Any behavior that negatively affects other students in any other aspect will be addressed quickly and appropriately in accordance with our code of conduct."
