Sworn in as the 47th President at the ceremony

Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th president of the United States on Monday, returning to office in a grand ceremony in the Capitol Rotunda.

Shortly after JD Vance was sworn in as Vice President, Trump was sworn in by Chief Justice John Roberts.

"America's golden age begins now," Trump said in his inaugural address. He quickly vowed to end the "evil, violent and unfair weaponization of our Department of Justice" and crack down on "radical and corrupt institutions."

Trump said he has been "tested and challenged more than any president in our 250-year history." He received loud applause when he mentioned the assassination in Butler, Pennsylvania, saying "an assassin's bullet went through my ear."

“I felt then, and I believe even more now, that my life was saved for a reason,” he said. "God saved me and made America great again."

Trump outlined the steps he would take as president and vowed to send troops to the southern border to "repel a catastrophic invasion of our country." He also pledged to eliminate the presence of "foreign gangs and criminal networks" under the Foreign Enemies Act of 1798.

He promised to raise tariffs, saying it would "put a lot of money into our treasury."

He also promised to sign an executive order to "immediately end all government censorship and restore free speech in America."

Trump was accompanied by First Lady Melania Trump and his children as he took the oath of office. When he finished, he shook hands with outgoing President Joe Biden and others at the podium.

Cardinal Timothy Dolan and the Rev. Franklin Graham offered prayers before the ceremony. "Look what God has done," Graham said, earning applause from the crowd, and then mentioned the assassination attempt. “Father, when Donald Trump’s enemies thought he was down and out, you single-handedly saved his life and used your mighty hand to lift him up with strength and strength.”

Sen. Amy Klobuchar, the Democratic chairwoman of the inaugural committee, called for a ceremony to honor Martin Luther King Jr. and democracy. She also quoted Bob Dylan and said it was crucial to "ensure that our nation's democracy is our shelter from the storm."

Earlier in the day, Trump and his wife were greeted at the White House by outgoing Biden and first lady Jill Biden.

"Welcome home," Biden said.

Biden issued a series of pardons in his final hours in office, including pardoning members of the Jan. 6 committee that investigated Trump's efforts to overturn the 2020 election. Biden also pardoned Dr. Anthony Fauci.
