Louisiana authorities charged the second suspect with murder in the death of a television reporter who went to New Orleans to cover the Super Bowl.
Adan ManzanoOn February 5, a 27-year-old journalist and host in Telemundo, Kansas City, Missouri died in his hotel room in the suburbs of New Orleans in Kenner, New Orleans. A woman seen in a security video leaving Manzano's room was later charged with second-degree murder and stole his credit card and cell phone.
Kenner police announced Monday that an accomplice, Rickey White, 34, was also charged with second-degree murder. White was arrested in Florida in March on charges of robbery and fraud related to Manzano's death and was extradited to Louisiana.
Kenner police said in a press release that the murder charges against White were caused by "continuous investigation efforts", but officials did not provide further details.
"Investigators worked tirelessly to reveal the details of the incident that led to Manzano's tragic death," Kenner Police Commissioner Keith Conley said in a statement.
In a March 18 press conference, Conley said investigators linked White to 49-year-old Danette Colbert, the first suspect in the case to be charged, based on "where letters and information go back and forth. So we think they are going hand in hand with each other."
White's attorney Kevin Boshea said he had not been informed of murder before an Associated Press reporter called him on Monday.
Bosey said: "I don't think he committed other crimes, so how could he be guilty of murder?"
Boshea said he urged police at a preliminary hearing on robbery and fraud charges last month to show White was in the New Orleans area when Manzano died, but they did not raise it.
Colbert's lawyers have said that police are making "assumptions and speculations" to connect her to Manzano's death.
Under Louisiana law, defendants can be charged with second-degree murder because they distributed drugs that caused death or committed crimes including robbery, causing someone to die.
Jefferson Parish coroner Gerry Cvitanovich told reporters in March that Manzano's body, who was found unable to breathe after ingesting alcohol and depression, died.
Police said the security video of the Manzano Hotel showed him entering his room with Colbert the day he died. Video shows Colbert not leaving after about an hour. Authorities said Colbert then used Manzano's credit card to purchase at New Orleans gas stations and several stores in the area.
Police also said Manzano's medical records did not show prescriptions for Xanax or other depression agents, and they recovered the drug from Colbert's home. Last year, she was found guilty of charges of theft and fraud in an unrelated case and was arrested twice in Las Vegas for felony theft in 2022 and taken drugs to assist with the felony offense.
In the case in Las Vegas, Colbert was accused of giving drugs to men in their hotel room and stealing from them. However, Daniel Lippmann told the Associated Press earlier this year that the victim did not want to testify in court, which was eventually dismissed because the victim did not want to testify in court.
WWL-TV reported that detectives believed Colbert and Manzano met one night, and later allegedly gave him drugs later in his hotel room, incapacitating him before stealing his phone and credit card. The radio reported that authorities have accused White of helping to promote theft, including providing transportation.
They also said White and Colbert had multiple exchanges on the day Manzano's death, with some text messages containing discussions about obtaining the victim's pin numbers and using "knocks" to incapacitate them, citing court records.
The Kenner Police Department is coordinating with the Louisiana State Police, the State Attorney General’s Office and the Jefferson Diocese District Attorney’s Office as they continue to investigate Manzano’s death.
