Sundance champion "Cactus Pear" director Kanawade's logo

After he won the historic Sundance Grand Jury Award as “Cactus Pear” (“Sabal Bonda”), director Rohan Parashuram Kanawade reached a management agreement with the film media to reveal the deal on the sidelines of the Cannes Film Festival.

Kanawade's debut work has been created history, becoming the first Marathi film and the first Indian novel title, saying Sundance received Sundance's top world film drama competition honors this January.

In "Cactus Pear", a city resident in his 30s named Anand is forced to spend a 10-day mourning period for his father in a rural western India, where he struggles to remain unmarried with local farmers. Emotionally resonant dramas have been linked to cross-border audiences since Sundance’s victory.

The film will be released this fall through a drama released by Strand, with festival performances held since then including the New Director/New Film, the San Francisco Film Festival (San Francisco Film Festival won the Special Jury Award - Visual) and the Los Angeles Indian Film Festival (winning the Audience Choice Award for Best Book).

Kanawade's solo journey adds another layer to the film's success story. He grew up in a house in a slum in Mumbai by a driver’s father and an illiterate housewife, and he is a homemade filmmaker with an interior design background. His short film is screened worldwide, "Cactus Pear" was developed in the Venice Biennale Academy Cinema 2022-2023, and also includes London Production Financing Market 2021, NFDC Marathi Script 2021, Film Bazaar 2022, 2022, Venice Gap Fincorming Market 2023, Cannes 20224 2024 2024.

Actors include Bhushaan Manoj, Jayshri Jagtap and Suraaj Suman. Vikas Urs handled photography behind the camera, with Anadi Atheley editor, Anirban Borthakur and Naren Chandavarkar as sound designers.

The movie will represent Kanawade in all media.
