Standing on the side, Messi and Ronaldo: Yamal and Dui are here

Munich - Less than a year ago in Munich, the teenager sensationalized Lamine Yamal to announce himself on the world stage, so it was easy to make 19-year-old Désiré Doué push himself to inspire himself on the same field on Saturday night, inspiring Paris Saint-Germain’s first Champions League title.

In the next few years, Allianz Arena may be considered a launch pad for two players (both named for the FC 100) who will dominate at the highest level. Champions League, World Cup, team D'Or... prepares Doué and Yamal to become this generation of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Yamal's moment in Munich took place on July 9, 2024, when the 16-year-old opened the opening goal of the 2024 European Cup semi-finals, which made him the youngest ever goal score in a big tournament, erasing the legendary Brazilian strike Bailey from the record.

Doué made his mark for PSG in their sensing 5-0 Champions League final win against Inter Milan on Saturday with two goals, becoming the younger player (and first teenager) to score twice in the final, eclipsing a record that had stood since Eusebio's double for Benfica in their 5-3 win against Real Madrid in 1962. His heroics helped him beat Yamal to the UEFA Champions League Young Player of the Year Prize, awarded in the wake of Saturday's major victory.

As a footnote, Douai also beat Jude Bellingham to become the youngest player to assist in the Champions League final when setting Achraf Hakimi's opening goal.

“I have nothing to describe tonight,” Douai told reporters after the game. "It's amazing. We're rewriting the history of the club and the history of French football, and it's part of it. I'm trying to do business as usual. It's one of the most important games in the club, but we're implementing it as a team and it's definitely great."

Not long ago, Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland were proposed to replace Messi and Ronaldo on the pedestal of football, but Real Madrid forwards were 26 years old and 24 years old in Manchester City, suddenly looked like an old man, compared to Yamal and Doué. The two kinds of teenagers’ feelings have broken the records and written their own pages in the history books.

Indeed, when Spain plays France in Stuttgart's European League semifinal, Yamal and Douai may face each other for the first time on Thursday, which could be the beginning of the competition - for club, national and individual honors - lasted for a decade or more.

They are both very talented strikers, as are their rhythm, deception and extraordinary confidence in trying, and they also play for the two largest and most powerful clubs in the world (Barcelona (Yamal) and PSG (Doué), and they both regularly compete in World Cup and Europe, just like representing heavyweight countries.

Yamal is ahead of Douai in terms of fame and popularity on the world stage. He has achieved international success, helping Spain win the European Euro in 2024 last year, and he played a major role in the club's Laliga success in all matches this season.

Although PSG forward Ousmane Dembélé is a favorite to win the Ballon d'Or, his 33 goals and 13 assists provide the cornerstone of the club's treble success, Yamal is a strong contender and may be the first teenager to win the award. With Brazil's Ronaldo Nazario still the youngest Ballon d'Or champion of 1997 (21 years and 95 days), Yamal and Doué can still write him out of the record.

Doué's rise has risen to the past 12 months since evacuating €50 million from Rennes last summer, rejecting interest from Bayern Munich, Arsenal and Manchester United in order to move to Parc des Princes.

But even in Rennes, Doué is making history. When he was 17 in August 2022 against Brest, he became the first player born in 2005 to score in any of the top five European leagues. Six weeks later, his goal against Dynamo in the Europa League made him the youngest French scorer ever in European matches (17 years, four months, and four days).

At PSG, Doué is part of Luis Enrique's strong frontline with Dembele and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, scoring 15 goals in all games and 16 assists in 54 games, but despite his incredible year, he remains humble.

"We have a lot of young players, and we still need to develop players, and I'm one of them," he said in Munich. "And I always try to get better. It's normal for me; a normal learning curve. After transferring a big transfer, I need time to find my feet and settle down, but I brushed my shoulders with the best players, which helped me achieve significant achievements in football."

Doué's contribution to PSG's glittering season led him to win his first senior French appearance in the National League playoff game against Croatia in March. He has some work to do with Yamal, who has already won 19 blocks for Spain, but on Thursday, in Stuttgart we can see the first chapter in the Doué-Yamal competition.

No one is almost unlikely to match Messi Ronaldo’s story—the 13 balloons between them don’t even start telling it—but the two players currently capturing the next generation of imagination are Douai and Yamal. They failed the hype.
