On the eve of this year's Cannes Film Festival, the Spanish Cinema rode two films - "Sirat" and "Romería" in the official competition of the event, while another film was selected as Critic Week - "Insomnia City". However, as one of the most important producers and champions of the country’s most important producers and industry-defining series, the cinema later, Movistar Plus+ novels and entertainment directors Domingo Corral, put the shadows over the celebratory spirit, which quit the company, leaving the future of the country’s largest independent film supporter.
For more than a decade, Corral has been the driving force behind Movistar Plus+'s advancement of original storytelling, advocating for an ambitious series that redefines Spain's place in the international audio-visual landscape. Under his leadership, the platform evolved into one of Europe's most respected script content producers, rivaling products like Netflix and HBO Europe in popularity.
His exit quietly announced last week that the creative community was shocked amid changes in senior leadership in Telefónica and Movistar Plus+. Although no official explanation was given, industry insiders cite internal restructuring and shifts in corporate strategies. The timing seemed particularly cruel, with Spain gaining new visibility on the world stage, and one of its most important enablers was the pause.
Responsive and emotional. The chorus of nearly 150 famous figures in the Spanish entertainment sector, including modern idols such as Pedro and Agustín Almodóvar, Javier Bardem, Penélope Cruz and Alejando Amenábar, publicly expressed their gratitude and attention in the open letter. They not only built a platform to enhance Spanish stories, but also fostered a collaborative environment rooted in creativity and transparency.
Representatives of the next generation of outstanding artists in Spain also exist, including Los Javis - Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo - Leticia Dolera, Rodrigo Sorogoyen and Cannes regular Oliver Laxe, who led this year's game player "Sirat", by Movistar plus + Movistar plus++++++.
Their appeal goes beyond nostalgia, and it is a call to maintain a cultural ecosystem that many consider vulnerable. Corral's management has made popular songs like "Querer" and "La Mesías" appeal to the audience and symbolizes the bold new narrative voice of Spain. Often hosted by young or emerging directors, these projects bring a new sense of identity to Spanish novels, based on authenticity, experimentation and artistic risks.
The open letter, in expressing deep appreciation, is a subtle warning to incoming executives Jorge Pezzi and Hugo Tomás, who took over the novel and entertainment respectively. The creative community is paying close attention and urging them not to give up on the principle of making Movistar Plus+ a beacon for independent and groundbreaking work.
The complete statement and current list of co-signers can be found below:
Given that Domingo Corral, after the departure of the director of novels and entertainment at Movistar Plus+, was committed to bringing Spanish films and series to the top of national and international audio-visual scenes in a decade, we would like to express our deepest gratitude to him and his entire team.
Thanks to Telefónica for her commitment to creating original content during the revolutionary decade of the industry, Domingo Corral and his entire team have advocated an idea, a project based on respect for creators, working closely with independent producers, and listening to all the partners who work with them without ignoring their focus on entertainment.
His critical and publicly famous series and novel achievements are evident. He made a series of films and produced what is now part of Spain’s audio-visual heritage, and won the most prestigious audio-visual awards in Spain and abroad year after year.
In addition to greatly benefiting the industry’s industrial structure and providing opportunities for new voices over the past decade, Domingo Corral’s team is also an example of how many of us are doing our projects. Their dedication, honesty and transparency make this possible.
