Spanish GP: Max Verstappen acknowledges George Russell Crash "shouldn't happen"

Max Verstappen said his controversial collision with George Russell at the Spanish Grand Prix was "not right" and that in a social media article "shouldn't happen" in a social media article in the morning after the game.

The four-time world champion was sentenced to a 10-second fine for causing the crash as he seemed to have Russell surpassed the fifth round before accelerating and driving into the side of Mercedes.

Verstappen showed no accidental signs in his post-match interview, and when asked if he intentionally caused a collision, he replied: "Is it relevant?"

But in an Instagram post Monday morning, the Red Bull driver admitted his mistake, saying he was frustrated by what happened.

"We had an exciting strategy and good race in Barcelona until the safety car came out," Verstappen said. "Our tire selections to the end, the safety car had some movement after restarting, which frustrated me and caused the movement to be incorrect and shouldn't have happened.

"I always provide everything for the team and the mood can be very high. You win together, you lose some together. See you in Montreal."

The Red Bull driver was in third place when the safety car was deployed to remove Andrea Kimi Antonelli's Andrea Kimi Antonelli's Andrea Kimi Antonelli from a 10-round gravel trap.

Since Verstappen has used his distribution of soft and medium tires on the three-stop strategy, he has only one set of hard tires left when he hits under the safety car.

The two cars behind him - Charles Leclerc and Russell - both had soft tires under the safety car, so they had a performance advantage when the race recovered.

Leclerc passed Verstappen shortly after crossing the start finish line for a recovery game, and Russell tried to enter Turn 1 and saw the Mercedes driver slip into Verstappen and forced the Red Bull driver to wide.

The housekeeper investigated the incident, and Red Bull feared that it could lead to a fine for Verstappen for leaving the track and gaining an advantage.

Verstappen's engineer Gianpiero Lambiase broadcasted the defending champion, telling him to return the position to Russell to avoid potential fines - a frustration for Verstappen.

In the next circle of 5-year-old approach, Verstappen seems to attribute the position to Russell, just to speed up again before the vertex and collide with Mercedes.

The housekeeper thought Verstappen had a complete collision and sentenced his giant to a 10-second fine and 3 fines.

The additional penalty points mean that Verstappen's next two games will be one point from the game ban.

Meanwhile, the tenth-place finish dropped Verstappen by 49 points in the rankings of champion leader Oscar Piastri.
