Sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter that the Cleveland Browns had a one-year contract with free agent wide receiver Diontae Johnson.
The agreement was followed after Johnson made an official visit to the Browns on Monday.
Johnson, 28, is about to have a dramatic season, jumping around with three teams (Carolina Panthers, Baltimore Ravens and Houston Texans).
After leading the Panthers with 30 receptions and 357 yards to the Ravens in the first two months of the season, Johnson was traded to the Ravens and won a sixth-round pick for the Baltimore fifth-round pick. He lasted for seven weeks with the Ravens, with a total of 1 catch, 6 catch yards and a game suspension as he refused to play against the Philadelphia Eagles on December 1.
After Baltimore gave up on him, Johnson was claimed by the Texans on December 23 and had two catches for 12 yards in a game in Houston. He was then abandoned by the Texans on January 14, apparently frustrated after he played 15 snaps in the playoffs where he beat the Los Angeles Charger in the playoffs.
Surprisingly, Johnson was declared by Baltimore that immunity was a chance for him to enter the Ravens’ compensatory draft formula in 2026. Because Johnson agreed to a deal after the NFL draft, that was not the case.
After the Browns did not pick players in last week's draft, they needed a veteran receiver in the offseason. Jerry Jeudy was selected for the Pro Bowl and was the only broad player in a roster with at least 50 catches in a season. Cleveland signed veteran Deandre Carter, but he was primarily a return expert in his career.
Elijah Moore is second in the 538 yards and he still has no signature. But, a source told ESPN's wild Yates that the Browns rarely place unlimited free agent bids on Moore, who visited Buffalo bills on Monday.
If Moore signs before the unrestricted free agent bid deadline, he will still be counting towards compensatory draft formulas. But if not, he would be eligible to sign with the Browns. The tender is worth US$3.428 million.
Johnson won a third-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, with the Pittsburgh Steelers having 391 catches for 4,363 yards and 25 touchdowns. In 2021, he won the Pro Bowl draft in the final year of quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and won the Pro Bowl draft in the eight-time touchdown catch-up game for quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.
ESPN's Jamison Hensley and Daniel Oyefusi contributed to the report.
