HOUSTON - The Texans have fired offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik after two years in Houston, sources told ESPN on Friday. Houston also fired offensive line coach Chris Strausser and assistant offensive line coach Cole Popovich, sources said, adding that when the team hires a new offensive coordinator Decisions will be made on the remaining offensive personnel.
The Texans won the AFC South in 2024 (10-7) and the divisional round for the second straight season, but the offensive line struggled throughout the year. On the Monday after the season, coach Demeco Ryans said he wanted to take a week to evaluate the staff, and when asked about Slowik's performance, he was short on giving a ringing endorsement.
"I think being with Bobby, I saw some growth," Ryans said. "I saw some improvement throughout the year."
Ryans also mentioned how the Texans' offense needs to improve after a disappointing season, as the unit ranked 18th in scoring (22.1) and 16th in total offense (329 yards per game). The most shocking aspect of the offense is the pass protection. Quarterback C.J. Stroud threw 52 sacks (second in sacks) and allowed 38.6 percent of his sack pressures (third, according to NFL Next Gen Stats).
The magnitude of Stroud's pressure rate is greater, with a pressure rate time of 2.59, which is the seventh-fastest next-generation statistic. Struggling through defensive tunes and stunts against the defense, resulting in 52 unblocked pressures (the second-most).
As a result, Stroud has statistically degraded from his outstanding rookie year. He finished 15th in passing yards (3,727) and tied for 15th (eighth in the NFL) in passing touchdowns (20), with the TD in Year 1 in two fewer games. Formation (13th time). That's Pro Bowl teammates in left tackle Larremy Tunsil, running back Joe Mixon and wide Nico Collins.
Aside from Stroud, the Texans offense has struggled to set up a massive effort this year. For the offense, the second half is a huge problem as it averages a league-low 7.5 points per half. From Week 7 to Week 12, the Texans didn't score an offense.
With Pro Bowl wideout Stefon Diggs and Mixon contributing in 2024, the Texans' offense has high hopes. Diggs tore his ACL in Week 8 against the Indianapolis Colts, but even with Mixon rushing for 1,018 yards, the offense was always challenged, especially in key situations. The offense ranks 17th in third downs (38.9) and 28th in red zone scoring (48.4).
"Overall, offensively, this is not where we want to be," Ryans said. "There are challenges all year long, every year. You have challenges, you have your ups and downs, you try to figure out the course, The people we have and how we make it work we have to improve.”
Slowik is Ryans' first offensive hire in 2023 after spending six years with the San Francisco 49ers. The Texans' offense thrived during the duo's first season in Houston, with Stroud becoming just the fifth rookie to eclipse 4,000 yards in a season and lead with passing yards per game ( 274) and led the league in touchdown to touchdown ratio (23:5), something only quarterbacks Joe Montana and Tom Brady accomplished.
