Sources told ESPN on Wednesday that Phoenix is hiring Cleveland Cavaliers assistant coach Jordan Ott as the team's next head coach.
A pair of Cavaliers aides for Ott and Johnnie Bryant appeared this week at Phoenix coaching finalists and held in Michigan with Suns owner Mat Ishbia, CEO Josh Bartelstein and general manager Brian Gregory. Team officials have focused on Ott and Bryant in recent weeks, who joined the Cavaliers’ coach of the year last summer, Kenny Atkinson’s first staff, ownership and front desk hired OTT on Wednesday. Sources said that in the final stage, Suns Franchise Cornerstone Devin Booker was involved in the search process and stamping the OTT was also his best choice.
Ott has been an NBA assistant coach since 2012 and is rooted in the principles of strong offensive and defensive creativity, player development and resilience. Sources say he is known around the NBA as a strong communicator with his players and coaching staff, and someone has spent a lot of time researching trends and avenues to adjust to the new model.
The Suns conducted a comprehensive coaching search after firing Mike Budenholzer on April 14 and naming Gregory as their new general manager on May 1. Gregory led a number of processes, starting with more than 15 coaching interviews. About eight candidates held a second round of meetings six times before Bryant, Ott, Chris Quinn of Miami, Sean Sweeney of Dallas, Dave Bliss of Oklahoma City and current staff member David Fizdale - visited last week with team officials.
The Cavaliers have won the Eastern Conference Best 64 wins this season and are now losing to one of the Suns' top assistants. According to ESPN's research, the Cavaliers ranked first in offensive efficiency and ranked eight in defensive efficiency this season. Otter has also served as a staff member for the Atlanta Hawks (2013-16), the Brooklyn Nets (2016-22), and the Los Angeles Lakers (2022-24), while Bryant has also served as an assistant to the Utah Jazz (2012-20-20-20) and the New York Knicks (2020-24). Bryant played at Utah University from 2005 to 2008, while Ott was the video coordinator for Tom Izzo's Michigan State Men's Basketball Program from 2008 to 2013.
With their coach rentals, the Suns are now starting the offseason of the franchise. Sources say the Suns will work on the next landing site with All-Star forward Kevin Durant and his business partner and board CEO Rich Kleiman, who is expected to have a strong market for about four to six teams in the offseason.
