A source told ESPN's Adam Schefter that the Pittsburgh Steelers had a conversation with the Miami Dolphins' close Jonnu Smith on Tuesday.
The source told Schefter earlier Tuesday that trade is not expected to be completed, and the development brings new life to possible trade between the steelman and the dolphins.
Sources also told Schefter earlier Tuesday that the team will host free agent wide receiver Gabe Davis during this week's visit. Sources told Schefter that Davis is scheduled to travel to Pittsburgh on Wednesday to visit the Steelers.
Although the Steelers have PAT Freiermuth and Darnell Washington in the roster at Tuesday's OTA meeting, they may look for a third true ending after free agents acquire Donald Parham Jr. Tore Tore tore his Achilles tendon.
After four seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers, Parham spent 2024 on the Broncos’ practice lineup, last played in 2023.
The Steelers used Mycole Pruitt, who spent some time with Atlanta's offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, their third tension last season, but the team didn't re-sign him after his one-year contract expired.
Sources told Schefter that Smith, 29, expressed interest in the Dolphins to reprocess his two-year deal last offseason, which would pay him $4.8 million in 2025.
Smith Agent Drew Rosenhaus said Sunday night that his client's "first choice" was to stay with the Dolphins.
"This is what I said on behalf of my clients: Jonah definitely wants to stay in Miami. It's his first choice," Rosenhouse said in a weekly appearance on WSVN-TV. "This is his residence in the offseason. He had a record season last year. It was the best season ever to have ended closely with the Miami Dolphins. ... He broke the team record for catch, catch, catch yards and touchdowns and was a single Pro Bowl player on the team. He is part of this team.
“Hopefully everything will figure out where he can stay in Miami.”
Smith set a franchise record (884) in receptions (88) and catch yards (884) last season. He led all Dolphins players to lead at reception in his first year on the team and was second only to Brock Bowers, Trey McBride and George Kittle in the league, in the catching yards of the catch yards.
The Steelers’ interest in Smith is rooted in offensive coordinator Arthur Smith’s long-term relationship with the close end. Arthur Smith, a tense coach and offensive coordinator for Jonnu Smith, Tennessee, later replaced his former player during his tenure as head coach of the Falcons.
The Steelers are looking for help after trading George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys in the offseason.
However, the Steelers don’t have huge demand on the tight end. They signed Freiermuth, a 2021 second-round pick, last offseason extension and returned to Washington, a third-round pick in 2023. They also have tight end/backer Connor Heyward.
Parham has 11 professional touchdowns and he signed in the offseason.
The Steelers waved four ends in last season's 53-man lineup.
