Boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao will end his nearly four-year retirement in Las Vegas on July 19, facing WBC middleweight champion Mario Barrios.
This battle will be held through Prime Video Pay-Per-tive Watch PBC.
Pacquiao, 46, was last played in August 2021 when he lost a unanimous decision against Yordenis Ugas in the WBA Middleweight Championship. After the loss, Pacquiao announced his retirement on social media, focusing mainly on his political career. But the first and only Eightpoint World Champion of Boxing has been following the sport that makes him a household name.
Rumors of his return have been circulating over the past year. In July 2024, Pacquiao participated in the exhibition boxing competition between Super Rizin 3 and Taekwondo Rukiya Anpo. Pacquiao's name has fought Barrios since late last year.
WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman told Boxing King Media during the Canelo-Alvarez-William Scrull battle in Saudi Arabia that the plan was to defend the title against Pacquiao in the summer, noting that Pacquiao has been contested by the Nevada State University Athletic Commission. The WBC has written the rules that state that after retirement, former champions are allowed to require a title battle.
"Currently, Mario Barrios will face Manny Pacquiao in July," Suleiman said. "It's a huge battle."
The boxing team’s first and only eight-pointer champion will be selected for the Boxing Hall of Fame. He also was in a very close Senate match in the Philippines, after he served as a Senate from 2016 to 2022. According to brunch boxing, Pacquiao will not officially announce his return to boxing until after the May 12 election. But all signs and sources point to Pacquiao's announcement, his announcement is his return to boxing form.
In a decision-making victory against Mike Tyson by Jake Paul, Barrios (29-2-1, 18 KO) fought San Antonio and lasted with Abel Ramos. He won the interim WBC title in September 2023, when he beat UGA and won the full title in June 2024 after Terence Crawford was designated as the WBC's "Champion Champion" and he rose to 154 pounds to face Israel Madrimov. Barrios only lost two times to Gervonta Davis and Keith Thurman.
The United Event will be a rematch between unified junior middleweight champions Sebastian Fundora (22-1-1, 14 KOS) and Tim Tszyu (25-2, 18 KOS). The two met on March 30, 2024. TSZYU was originally scheduled to face Thurman, but the injury forced Thurman to be less than two weeks before the scheduled date. Fundora stepped in to a brief replacement and won the split decision.
The TGB Promotion currently owns T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, held on July 19. But Lady Gaga's Mayhem Ball Tour will be promoted on July 16, 18 and 19, which could shift the battle to the neighboring MGM Grand Garden Arena, where Paqqiao made its debut in the country, where it won the first major world championship at Lehlohonololo Ledwaba.
