Sources told ESPN that the New York Knicks are conducting an active due diligence on Dallas Mavericks coach Jason Kidd.

Sources said the Knicks have not requested a conversation with Kidd, who has two years left to be extended for the contract he signed in the 2024 NBA finals.

Dallas general manager Nico Harrison and Gov. Patrick Dumont have not discussed whether the franchise is willing to allow Kidd to talk to the Knicks, sources said.

In theory, the team could make a deal that would allow the Knicks to hire Kidd. However, New York has exhausted future draft assets by sending five first-round picks to the Brooklyn Nets in the trade of last summer’s forward Mikal Bridges.

New York won eight picks from the Washington Wizards and eight second-round picks, including No. 50 in the June draft. The Knicks can also offer first-round swaps in 2026, 2030, 2031 and 2032.

Kidd is part of the group interviewed by the Knicks Job in 2020 before Thibodeau.

The Knicks chose to move on from the fourth-win coach in franchise history Thibodeau and their most successful coach of the century so far, after New York was eliminated by the Pacers in the Eastern Conference Finals.

Thibodeau, who led the Knicks to the first 50-win season since the mid-1990s, overseeing the club's astonishing second-round victory over defending champion Boston Celtics. But he also tends toward the first five games, with a lower return rate in the second half of the regular season and growing throughout the playoffs. ESPN Research says his .579 win rate in the regular season is the highest in league history (at least 300 games).

Kidd completed his Hall of Fame career with The Knicks in 2013, where he served as head coach for the Brooklyn Nets and Milwaukee Bucks before signing to lead the Mavericks. Dallas has reached a 54.6% win percentage (179-149) in four seasons with Kidd.

Kidd led the Mavericks to the finals a year ago, but the Dallas has since been dealt with superstar Luka Doncic, a move that Mavericks executive Harrison admitted he was not run by Kidd before a February blockbuster deal with Los Angeles Lakers.
