Solar panel manufacturer Meyer Burger's German subsidiary filed for bankruptcy

Swiss solar panel maker Meyer Burger Technology announced that its German subsidiaries Meyer Burger (Industries) and Meyer Burger (Germany) have begun bankruptcy proceedings.

This move is in an unsuccessful restructuring effort to maintain operations of facilities located in the cities of Bitterfeld-Wolfen and Hohenstein-nernstthal.

Saxony-Anhalt's Bitterfeld-Wolfen facility employs 331 employees in solar cell production. Hohenstein-nernstthal, Saxony, has 289 employees in the fields of mechanical engineering and technical development.

Working with the temporary bankruptcy administrator appointed by the court will continue to work as part of the bankruptcy proceedings to keep the German facilities operating.

The development is on the backdrop of an ongoing financing negotiations aimed at restructuring, based in Thun, Switzerland, to expand for 2024 financial results.

Subsidiaries in Switzerland and the United States will be retained.

Meyer Burger (Switzerland), which has 60 employees, will continue its activities, while Meyer Burger (Americas) will exist as a company, although it laid off all 282 employees on May 29, 2025 and ceased production in its inherent Arizona facility.

Due to funding issues and shortage of raw materials, production of solar modules at Goodyear facilities has ceased.

The shutdown of U.S. production, with an annual output of 1.4GW, creates uncertainty about the future of the site.

Meyer Burger is still discussing the restructuring with a group of bondholders.

This affects two convertible bonds issued by MBT Systems, which are guaranteed by Meyer Burger Technology and are issued in 2027 and 2029.

In 2024, Meyer Burger decided to close solar module production in Freiberg, Germany starting from March 2024 to avoid further losses in Europe.

“The German subsidiary archives of solar panel maker Meyer Burger are bankrupt” was originally created and published by global Data-owned brand Power Technology.
