The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has conducted a criminal investigation into Motown singer Smocky Robinson after four of his staff members accused him of sexual assault and wage theft.
Robinson, 85, was sued earlier this month by three former housekeepers and a former personal assistant who claimed the singer, whose legal name is William Robinson, forced them to have sex with him and failed to pay the minimum wage or overtime pay.
The lawsuit was filed in the Los Angeles County Superior Court and also accused the singer’s wife, Frances Robinson, of frequently screaming at employees, using racially derogatory terms and not taking any measures to prevent sexual abuse by her husband despite allegedly known about his actions.
Christopher Frost, the couple's attorney, denied the allegations. Details of the Sheriff’s Department investigation were not immediately provided Thursday.
"The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Special Victims Department is actively investigating criminal charges involving William Robinson, also known as "Smokey Robinson," said department spokesman Nicole Nishida. "The investigation is in an early stage and we have no further comments."
Frost said the sheriff’s department must investigate the allegations because the woman filed a police report after the lawsuit was filed.
Frost said in a statement that the police report “has desperately tried to harm public opinion and enable the media circus to create more media than the plaintiffs before” and said his clients welcomed the investigation.
"The record will eventually prove that it is nothing more than a manufacturing lawsuit to torture Smokey and Frances Robinson's good names, which is all-encompassing greed," the statement said.
The lawsuit noted that the women had previously retained reporting to authorities the causes of alleged abuse for several reasons, including concerns about immigration status, loss of livelihoods, public humiliation and intimidation by Robinson and his influential friends.
Attorneys representing four women (prosecuting a lawsuit like Jane) said they were pleased to learn that the sheriff’s department had investigated clients’ claims of sexual assault.
"Our clients intend to fully cooperate with the ongoing investigation conducted by LASD to be assaulted by someone who seeks justice for themselves and others," attorneys John Harris and Herbert Hayden said in a statement.
The complaint said that civil lawsuits alleged that Robinson’s lawsuits were negligent, sexual assault and sexual assault, false imprisonment, intentional and negligent emotional distress, gender violence and hostile work environments caused by violations of wages, rest time, dietary periods, and labor practices on holidays and overtime.
The woman claimed that the "My Tears' Repertoire" singers asked them to have all kinds of sex with him in his house in Chatsworth, Bell Canyon and Las Vegas - vagina, verbally and digitally.
