Shoulder Injury Strength Saint QB Derek Carr Retired

New Orleans - Saints quarterback Derek Carr will retire on Saturday.

The Saints said Carl had lip tear and degenerative rotator cuff injury to his right, and the shoulder found in late March was thrown after he crossed the season. The team said Carl hasn't thrown a lot since he broke his non-thrower in December against the New York Giants.

According to the team, surgery was an option, but that would have put the 2025 season at risk, and Carl decided to retire.

"Surgery is an option that endangers the entire 2025 season, but there is no guarantee that Derek will regain the strength, function and performance level of habit," the Saints said in a statement.

Carr was the Raiders' second round pick in 2014, retiring after 11 seasons. During his free agent age in 2023, he spent four years in the Raiders’ contracts worth up to $150 million in the first nine seasons of his career with the Raiders.

The 34-year-old team started 169 games and finished with a 77-92 record. He completed 65.1% of passes with 41,245 yards, 257 touchdowns and 112 interceptions.

"After a prayer reflection, in a discussion with (wife) Heather, I decided to retire from the National Football League," Carl said in a statement released by the team. "We have been very happy for over a decade and we are forever very grateful and humbled by the experience. It's hard to find the right word to thank all teammates, coaches, managers, ownership, ownership, team officials, and especially the fans who have made this journey so special. You're doing nothing.

The New Orleans quarterback is now composed of 2025 second-round draft pick Tyler Shoough, 2024 fifth-round draft pick Spencer Rattler and 2023 fourth-round draft pick Jake Haener.

News of Carl's injury was made public in early April, although both sides have been quiet over the past month. Prior to the draft, the Saints said they wanted "clear" about the situation, and Carl's first public comment was published in late April when he said he suffered a shoulder injury and dismissed speculation about the issue.

Carl said he and the team have been "continuously communicating" about the injury.

"We are figuring this out and we will keep moving forward," Carl said in a guest sermon at Church LV in Las Vegas.
