Sheryl Crow opens up her decision to leave Los Angeles and start a new life in Tennessee.

In an interview with Variety Show released Wednesday, the 63-year-old singer reflected on how she moved to Nashville nearly 20 years ago, due to her sudden cancer diagnosis and a painful breakup by then-modern Lance Armstrong and the loss of the family she will carry with him.

“We all have to be critical moments in our lives,” Crow said. “I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006 and moved here in 2007.”

The Nine-time Grammy winner added: “I just looked at it and thought, ‘I want to take root; I want to have a family.’ “My sisters live here, my family lives in three hours and I just decided to start the second phase. ”

Crow and Armstrong began dating in 2003 and announced their engagement in 2005. But when they canceled their engagement in February 2006, the relationship between musicians and former professional cycling ended.

She told Diane Sawyer in a July 2006 interview after the breakup. “In a lot of ways it’s like part of life amputated, but you still have that phantom itch, you know, where you wake up, I’m going to see something and think, ‘Oh, I have to make sure Lance is excited about this band. I have to put it on his iPod.’ And then I remember, “Oh, wait, you know, that’s not my life.” ''

Armstrong, 53, told writer Josh Wilcockson in 2009 that their relationship broke down on her "biological clock" because she wanted children in the mid-40s, The New York Post reported. The former athlete is already the father of his son Luke, 25, while twin daughters Grace and 23-year-old Isabelle shared with his ex-wife Kristin Richard, who said he didn't want to have more children at the time.

Two weeks after the split, the crow received a regular mammogram, and she said she almost skipped in her personal life.

"I'm trying to focus on my career and have a public breakup with the paparazzi and fight with the paparazzi," she wrote in 2022 People magazine.

"I've always been a healthy person, prioritizing diet and exercise, but it seemed impossible at that time to focus on anything other than spending every day and staying professionally."

The singer's mammogram led to a biopsy that showed she had phase zero ductal cancer in one breast (DCIS). The crow then performed a mass removal procedure in breasts and seven weeks of radiation.
