Shanghai Film Festival unveils Golden Cup lineup

The 27th Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF) launched its Golden Goblet Awards Selection, with 49 films competing in five categories.

This year’s edition set a new record, with the competition sector receiving more than 2,800 submissions from 119 countries and regions, marking a significant increase in entries in the Americas and Africa. Short film submissions only increased by 18% year-on-year.

The main competition features 12 titles spanning different territories. These include Chile-UK-French directed by Miriam Heard, "After the Fog", "Black Red" from Akyrgyzstan from Aktan Arym Kubat, and Brazilian "Cyclone" directed by Flavia Castro. Chinese cinema entries include "My Father's Son", "A Weird Summer" and "Wild Night, Tamed Beasts". The section also features Poland's "Loss of Balance" (Korek Bojanowski), Germany's "Luisa" (Julia Roesler), Japan's "On Summer Sand" (Shinya Tamada), Argentina-Spain-Chile's "The Reborn" (Santiago Esteves), Portugal-Brazil's "The Scent of Things Remembered" (António Ferreira), and Germany-Sweeteld's "You believe in the angel, Mr. Drovak?" (Nicholas Steiner)​.

The new talent competition in Asia highlights emerging film producers, including China’s “As the Water Flow” (Bian Zhuo), “Ordds Waper” (Cheng Liang), “Qiu Yujie), “Last Summer” (Shi Renfei) and “Whice Where” (Fang Liang) (Fang Liang) from China. Japan's "Brand New Landscape" (Yuiga Danzuka), the fresh Cannes debut, and Turkey's "Grace for Sale" (Gözde Ayişkin, Emre Sert) and "Kanto" (Ensar Altay) (Ensar Altay) will bring international entries together. The festival also includes "Victoria" in India (Sivaranjini J), "Iran's "daughter" (Pourya kakavand), "Riverstone" in Sri Lanka (Lalith Rathnayake) and Italy-Philippines co-produced "places of the night"

The documentary category lists five titles: Iran's "Part of Land" (Nima Mahdian ASL), Mexico's "Travel 2045" (Olivia Luengas Magana), China's "Moon Catcher" (Xu huijing), Spain, Spain, "constanza" (constanza'' Bellasi, Markus Steiner Ender).

The animation category includes "The Edge of Time", a Chinese co-produced directed by Lee Wei, Wangming, Watanabe's Sinihiro and Shuhei Morita. Other conditions involve "Magic Beach" in Australia (Robert Connolly) to "Make A Girl" in Japan (Gensho Yasuda), "The Songbirds'Secret" in France-West resident-Beljim's "Tom and Jerry" co-produced by China-US: Frbidden Compass: Frbidden Compass (Zhang Gang).

The live short film competition has 10 entries from around the world. China contributed “The Story of Winter” (Luo Zhaogun, Zhou Nanjun), “Son of the Land” (Xu Rui), “Crow” (Xu Jianming) and “No one knows I’m gone” (Bo Hanxiong). International entries include Iran's "Diet in the Water" (Leira Hekmatnia), France's "Jonathan Millet" (Jonathan Millet), Portugal's "Jews or First Rebellion" (Pedro Carneiro), Peru's "Apocalypse", "Alessandro Mosca", Spain Miste and the Spain and the Sanz and the More of Migor and Moseral' and Jordi of Moselly' (Jordi of Migor). Italian director and screenwriter Giuseppe Tornatore, the champion of the Oscar "Movie Paradiso" will preside over the international jury. "The festival is not only a celebration of the film; it is an opportunity for people from different countries to get together, exchange ideas and enjoy great films," Tonatol said. "I am honored to be a juror at Siff and enjoy these incredible pieces with my fellow members in Shanghai."

This year's version introduces several firsts, including the merger of the Siff film market and the Shanghai TV Festival market, forming a unified international film and television market. The festival also launched Asia now, focusing on regional perspectives. Guided by the principle of "Asian, Chinese films and new talents", this year's festival is expected to have 60 Chinese films involving competition entries, premieres and classic movies.

The music festival will be held from June 13 to 22, followed by the Shanghai TV Festival from June 23 to June 27.
