Sean Diddy's criminal trial of comb continued on the second day in Manhattan, New York, where he faced charges including sex trafficking and blackmail.
The trial opened on Monday with a jury selection, opening ceremony and two painful testimony. The three-time Grammy winner has been accused of abuse of women with his reputation and destiny for 20 years.
Diddy, 55, is the founder of rapper, musician and record label Bad Boy Records, and has been in federal custody since his arrest in September. Magistrate Arun Subramanian presided over the case. The trial officially began on May 5.
Five count indictments against Diddy alleges accusing him of sexual trafficking, extortion, forced labor and transporting individuals for prostitution purposes. Rackets refer to fraud or dishonest behavior in business.
In November 2023, his ex-girlfriend and musician Casandra Ventura (also known for her stage name Cassie) filed a lawsuit against Diddy, accusing him of sexual trafficking, sexual assault and assault from 2007 to 2018.
The next day, Cassie and Diddy settled the lawsuit, details of which were unknown. Since then, hip-hop dancers have faced more than 50 lawsuits accusing him of sexual assault.
Didi pleaded not guilty to all charges.
If convicted, he could face punishment from 15 years in prison to life imprisonment.
The day begins with the selection of 12 New York jurors and six alternates, which they will use if jurors are unable to participate due to an emergency, such as a disease. The court then heard the opening speech.
Monday's drama show Diddy's court sketch with gray hair and a gray sweater. His mother, Janice Combs, also attended the court.
"For 20 years, the defendant committed the crime after the crime with the help of his trusted internal circle," said Emily Johnson, an assistant attorney in the United States. "That's why we're here today. That's the purpose of this situation."
After that, the witness was brought to the position and provided evidence.
The 2016 surveillance camera video was shown in the court, which showed the attack on Cassie in court. In the video, he sees him in the hotel's lift hangar, pushing Cassie to the ground and kicking her several times. He then saw him picking up her belongings, dragging her to the floor and leaving.
Frustrated to see Cassie, she started using her hotel landline phone. In another video clip, Didi is seen throwing a glass vase and breaking it. The video first surfaced when it was aired by CNN in 2024, and he apologized since then.
The video proved to be in support of the testimony of the first witness, currently a Los Angeles Police officer. In March 2016, Florez was a security guard for the Intercontinental City of Los Angeles, with surveillance camera videos coming from the city.
Florez told the court that he received a call from a distressed woman and found Diddy and Cassie on the sixth floor. Flores said Cassy's eyes had purple color and she refused his advice to call the police.
In his opening speech, prosecutor said Didi was involved in a sex gathering that might involve multiple sex workers. They said the parties were drug-related and the victims were blackmailed by video recordings.
"They will tell you the most painful experience of their lives," said Assistant U.S. Attorney Johnson. "They will tell you the most painful experience of their lives. The days they spent in their hotel rooms, tall drugs, dressed in costumes to perform the defendant's sexual fantasy."
Didi's defense believes that the incidents were voluntary and the victims did not call the police.
The second witness was called to the court, a stripper, Daniel Phillip, who told the court that he had sex with Cassie multiple times between 2012 and 2013, while Diddy watched. Phillip told the court that he saw Diddy physically attack Cassie, patted her, dragged her hair and threw a bottle of wine at her.
Philip said of Cassie: "She literally jumped onto my legs and she was shaking like her whole body was shaking. She felt fear."
The National Defense Force also delivered a speech on the opening day.
Defense attorney Teny Geragos believes her client is angry and violent, but the allegations against him equal domestic violence rather than sexual trafficking and that his relationship is certain.
"This situation is about a voluntary choice between a competent adult," Glagos said in her opening remarks. The BBC quoted her as saying, "For Cassie, she chose to be with him every day."
Geragos added that those who accuse Diddy were seeking financial compensation.
The trial is expected to resume Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. (13:30 GMT), while Phillip cross-examination. After that, Cassie is expected to stand up. Prosecutors said Didi’s four accusers will testify during the trial without public identification.
The trial is expected to last about two months.
No, the trial was not broadcasted on television, and electronic media was not allowed in the court. Therefore, photography and video are also prohibited in the court.
