Sean'Diddy comb formally rejected the U.S. government's offer to plead guilty and retained the possibility of a prolonged sentence.
The musician appeared in court Thursday wearing glasses and beige prison uniforms before the sex trafficking trial begins next week. He seemed to be in a good mood, waving the gallery when he arrived.
When Judge Arun Subramanian asked him if he had rejected the prosecutor's plea agreement, the comb replied: "Yes, I do, your honor. Thank you."
The 55-year-old is facing allegations of sexual trafficking and prostitution, accusing him of coercing women to prolong the sexual orgy he called "freaks." He denied all charges against him.
If he is convicted, the comb may spend the rest of his life in jail.
At a recent hearing, his attorney, Marc Agnifilo, previewed the star's defense attorney, saying the rapper led the "lifestyle" of "the swinger".
Mr Agnifilo believes that while some people may find this behavior inappropriate, it is not a crime.
The choice of the long-awaited jury in the trial started on Monday - coincidentally, the same day as the Met Gala (the glittering charity event), the Comb was once a lieutenant.
Earlier this week, they may have been justified despite strong media coverage of the case so far as they were presented with a questionnaire to potential jurors to find out what they know about the case.
Prosecutors and defense aim to screen up to 150 people before a statement issued on May 12.
The trial is expected to last for at least eight weeks, while Cassandra Ventura, a former partner at Combs, is expected to provide evidence.
Ventura, a R&B singer professionally known as Cassie, sued Comb in November 2023 for rape and continuous abuse in a decade of professional and romantic relationship, which he denied.
One day after the prosecution, she settled the case - but CNN later broadcasted surveillance footage showing a comb hitting, kicking and dragging Ventura in the lobby of a hotel in California.
Combs' lawyers tried to remove the videotape from the trial, believing that the video had accelerated and the incident had shown a sequence - although they did not deny the client's behavior.
But Judge Subramanian ruled last week that the camera could be accepted.
Combs has been jailed in Brooklyn since his arrest in September - away from his mansion in Miami and Los Angeles where he lives, but about an hour away from Harlem where he was born.
During the pretrial hearing, he looked bigger and thinner than his previous playboy role. His hair and beard turned gray because the infamous detention center did not allow hair dye, where he was locked in a special protective unit.
However, during his trial, the hip-hop man tycoon has received a special license to wear "non-prison clothing" and casual business outfits replace his tan prison jumpsuit.
According to the court's order, the comb will "allow up to five button-down shirts, up to five pairs of pants, up to five sweaters, up to five pairs of socks, and up to two pairs of shoes, without laces, to be worn in court".
Because prison clothing may affect jury decisions, defendants are usually allowed to wear clothes during trial.
