Dallas - Winnipeg Jets Center Mark Scheifele scored in the sixth game his club must win in the second round of playoff playoffs hours after his father's accidental death.

But he also received a free throw in overtime, scoring the star's strength goal with a 2-1 victory, thus eliminating the No. 1 Jets out of the playoffs.

After the game, Captain Adam Lowry went and took Scheifele from out of the box.

"We're a family. Just let him know we're around him. It's just a bad day for him." "You want to empower him, you want that to kill so bad. We just can't."

Afterwards, on the handshake line, Scheifele hugged and talked to everyone, the star player clearly provided him with support in heart-warming moments.

Scheifele scored his fifth goal in the second stage 5½ minutes of playoffs, giving the Jets a 1-0 lead. He scored in a brief snapshot outside the crease after collecting the rebounds from Kyle Connor's shot.

"I just know we have a great team here. I know that once we find out about it, he will have a great support group and we will serve him through highs and lows, and obviously today is a real low," health officer Nneal Pionk said of Scheifele. “(We) did everything we could to give him some words of encouragement and let him play tonight and play him the way he did, which was one of the bravest things we’ve ever seen.”

The game was 1 when Sam Steel, who had scored for Dallas, was resting. Scheifele desperately tried to make the game as he tripped the forward with a 14.8-second rule at the blue line. Scheifele and the Jets avoided the game's penalty, but ended up losing the power game when Thomas Harley scored 1:33 in overtime.

Jets coach Scott Arniel said the news of Brad Scheifele's overnight stay was difficult for the entire team. The team was told on an optional morning skateboard.

"On behalf of the Winnipeg Jets, we express our condolences to Mark and his family. We found out this morning, which shocked us," Anil said before the game. "Mark will be in the race tonight. As he said, that was his father's wish. He would want him to play."

Scheifele was the last Jets player to leave the hockey after warming up before the game, and at least part of the singing of "O Canada" he lowered his head and closed his eyes. He had an opening standoff against Roope Hintz.

"About Mr. Scheifele, he's a member of our family. He's a member of the Jets family. He goes back to 2011 when Mark first drafted here," Arniel said. "We have a lot of players around here and he's been a big part of their lives with his family. So it's certainly devastating for Mark and for many on this team."

Winnipeg general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff said the organization is doing everything it can to support Scheifele. There are no immediate words about the cause of Brad Scheifele's death.

The 32-year-old Mark Schiefele has scored 11 points (5 goals, 6 assists) in 11 of the 13 games this season's playoffs. Early in the series, he was injured in games 6 and 7 of his first round against St. Louis.

Winnipeg expanded the series with a 4-0 victory in Game 5 against the Stars on Thursday night, with Scheifele being hit by star captain Jamie Benn in a later Scrum. Benn was fined for misconduct in the game and fined up to $5,000 by the NHL, but avoided a suspension.

Scheifele scored 87 points (39 goals and 48 assists) in 82 regular season games.
