Jan-Ole Gerster's thriller Island, which first bowed in Berlinale earlier this year, has secured a key distribution agreement for the main character image and Auguste sales.
The film - Sam Riley ("Control", "Firepower"), Stacey Martin ("Brutalist", "nymphomaniac") and Jack Farthing ("Rampage Club", "Spencer") - has been sold to Greenwich Entertainment in the United States type Announced earlier this month.
Additional deals now include BFI Distribution, which took rights for UK and Ireland, Jour2FĂȘte for France, Cherry Pickers for Benelux, Jour2FĂȘte for France, Spentzos Film for Greece and Cyprus, Pris Audiovisuais for Portugal, Investacommerce AG for Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Slovenia, "Romanian Trans-Dianian Movie", "Barrow's Sea" Acme Movie, Arthouse Traffic in Ukraine, and the front row filmed Mena's entertainment. Penny Black gained aviation rights.
"Island" is Gerster's English debut, a script he co-wrote with Blaz Kutin and Lawrie Doran. The film was developed and produced by Maximilian Leo and Jonas Katzenstein for Augenschein Filmproduktion. It was co-produced by Leonine Studios and Schiwago movies. Leonine will also release the film in Germany in May 2025.
"Jan-Ole has created an incredibly tense and tightening thriller that our international partners agree will attract global audiences," said Sarah Lebutsch, acting senior vice president of sales for the lead character Pictures. "The quality of this group of top publishers proves the film's global appeal, as well as the undeniable talent in front and behind the camera."
The film was filmed live on the Canary Islands, following Tom, a tennis coach at a luxury island hotel in Riley, fills in the time between classes and one-night booth. The arrival of a mysterious family pulls Tom out of his normal route when he builds a relationship with Martin, her husband, Farthing, and their son Anton (Dylan Torrell). Tom could not shake the feeling he had met Anne before, the tension between them grew longer and longer until Dave disappeared overnight, and the police suspected Tom and Anne.
"Island" received four nominations in the prestigious Lola Awards, which is the Oscar for Germany - including Best Picture, Best Leading Actor, Best Original Music and Best Sound. In his Berlin review type'S Peter Debruge describes it as "engrossing" and emphasizes the protagonists of Martin and Riley.
