Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan underwent emergency surgery at Mumbai's Lilavati Hospital after he was attacked with a knife at his residence in Bandra in the early hours of Thursday. The 54-year-old actor clashed with an intruder around 2:30 a.m. local time and suffered multiple injuries.
According to police officials, Khan discovered the intruder in his 11th-floor apartment and tried to intervene when the suspect got into an argument with the household staff. The encounter resulted in Khan suffering multiple stab wounds, one of which was reportedly close to his spine.
A team of experts performed the 2.5-hour operation and additional plastic surgery is ongoing. A hospital representative confirmed that Khan was in stable condition.
The Mumbai crime branch has launched a parallel investigation with local police, deploying seven teams across the city. Authorities are currently reviewing security footage and interviewing home staff.
"A scuffle broke out between the actor and the intruder. The actor was injured and is undergoing treatment. Investigation is on," Deputy Commissioner of Police Dixit Gedam told news agency ANI.
Khan is a thirty-year veteran of the Indian film industry and hails from one of Bollywood's most famous dynasties. The son of cricket star Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi and actress Sharmila Tagore, he made his silver screen debut in 1993 with Parampara. His breakthrough came with the 1994 films Yeh Dillagi and Main Khiladi Tu Anari, making him a leading figure in Hindi cinema.
Throughout his career, Khan has been acclaimed for his performances in films such as "Dil Chahta Hai" (2001), "Omkara" (2006) and "Tanhaji" (2020). He has also branched out into digital streaming, starring in Netflix's "Sacred Games" and the Prime Video series "Tandav." His last work was Devara Part 1, one of the hottest films of 2024. The actor, who is married to Bollywood star Kareena Kapoor Khan, recently returned from a vacation in Switzerland with their two children.
Khan's representative issued a statement confirming the incident: "An attempted burglary occurred at the residence of Mr. Saif Ali Khan. He is currently undergoing surgery in the hospital. We ask that the media and fans remain patient. This is a matter for the police." "
