Nickelodeon has agreed to "common sense" AI protection for voice actors in animated shows Patrick Star Show and Explorer DoraAccording to the performers' alliance SAG-AFTRA.
The union announced Wednesday that it has reached a tentative deal with Nickelodeon, the sound is an animated show used in the animation show for basic wired and Paramount+. There are covered projects including Rugrats,,,,, Loud house,,,,, Fighting Coral and Rock scissorsthe three-year temporary contract also brings certain interest rates, new premiums and faster payment dates.
The union's national committee will vote on whether to approve the contract in July.
"I would like to thank our diligent negotiating committee for their dedication to their colleagues who have provided the art of voice for Nickelodeon's program. I am particularly pleased that Nickelodeon agreed to express AI protection for voice actors in a statement to Sag-Aftra National Executive Director Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, in a statement."
Hollywood Reporter Contacted Nickelodeon for comment.
The AI provisions in the Nickelodeon agreement borrow from protections previously negotiated in SAG-AFTRA's separate TV animation contracts in 2023. For instance, the Nickelodeon deal defines the term “voice actor” as applying only to humans and offers animation-specific guidelines for recognizing a performer in a digital replica (in the agreement, recognition triggers certain protections).
Given that actors in the animation can express multiple characters (think Nancy Cartwright The Simpsons) Transaction states that in the case of a digital copy based on employment, it is only necessary to determine the participants to help create replicas through business documents. Meanwhile, in the case of independently created digital copies, only their character voices can be recognized.
Performers can gain residuals if they digitize the performer's voice into a foreign language and require alliances and producers to meet for "regular" meetings about the use of artificial intelligence in the workplace.
Additionally, SAG-AFTRA touts improves its members’ legacy, interstitial and promotional labeling rates, as well as a 25% premium for “multiple fold/sweetness” or when layering the tracks. The payment due date has also been increased by five days.
"We are excited that productive negotiations have signed very powerful contracts for voice actors, including the enhanced capabilities of AI guidelines that protect voice performers," David Joliffe, chairman of the Nickelodeon Animation Agreement Negotiation Committee. "There is a lot to celebrate about this deal and we look forward to sending it to the board for review."
