HOSTON - Texans coach Demeco Ryans said Tuesday that he had limited throws against quarterback CJ Stroud in spring practice due to his “general soreness” on his shoulders.
The Texan opened the OTA on May 28, and Stroud had no passes during any media viewing. The most starting offense is running in 11-on-11 drills.
But Ryans is not worried about his quarterback's progress.
"No worries about CJ," Ryans said after the Texan's fifth OTA practice. "It's just a general soreness. We're taking extra precautions for him. He'll be fine. I won't worry."
When Ryans was asked whether Stroud would throw during the Texans mandatory training camp next week, he did not provide a clear attitude and declined to answer whether his Pro Bowl quarterback had offseason treatment for his throwing shoulders.
"When he was ready to go, he was ready," Ryans said.
According to next-generation statistics, Stroud is about to be beaten in a season as he was fired 52 times, ranked second in the NFL and was under pressure to drop by 38.6% (second-biggest).
The Kansas City Chiefs beat Stroud in a Texas playoff loss. He was fired eight times and put pressure on his downward retracement rate, the second in the NFL playoffs since ESPN began tracking pressure rates in 2009, trailing just former Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebo (63%).
To solve this problem, the Texan overhauled the pass. Houston exchanged Pro Bowl left tackle Laremy Tunsil for the Washington Commander draft pick. Left back Kenyon Green was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles for safe CJ Gardner-Johnson trade, while right back Shaq Mason was released.
To replace the trio that started 41 in 2024, Houston signed left tackles Cam Robinson, Swing Tackle Trent Brown and left back Laken Tomlinson, while trading former Minnesota Vikings right back Ed Ingram. Houston also traded in the draft, choosing Minnesota's left tackle Aireontae Ersery and earning the No. 48 draft pick to join the tackle room of Tytus Howard, Blake Fisher and Robinson.
Ryans also made coach changes to improve protection around Stroud. He fired offensive line coach Chris Strausser and offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik. He replaced Strausser with Texans assistant offensive line coach Cole Popovich and hired former Los Angeles Rams tight end and replaced Slowik through game coordinator Nick Calley.
Hopefully, with these moves, Stroud will be better protected so that the Texans can overcome the hump and go beyond the partition round, something the franchise has never done before.
