MANCHESTER, England — Ruben Amorim says he regrets saying his Manchester United side may be the worst in the club's history and insists he puts the blame on himself rather than the players.
Amorim made the comments following Sunday's 3-1 loss to Brighton.
The 39-year-old clarified his statement during a press conference on Wednesday.
But he went on to say he would be "delusional" if he didn't admit he had serious problems after suffering seven defeats in 15 games in charge.
"First of all, I want to talk about this," Amorim began after being asked for advice on what he considers to be the worst Manchester United team in history.
"I was talking more about myself than the players. I also said in the same response that I didn't help my players. If you look around every time I speak, every time you push the players it's not good enough, I never put my players in position.
"So I know I gave you this title, and sometimes I get frustrated. Sometimes I shouldn't say it in these terms, but that's the way it is, that's the way it is.
"Sometimes it's really hard to hide the frustration in the moment. But the good thing is, I said the same thing in a different way in the locker room five minutes ago. It was a normal reaction because I'm really forthright with my players." "
Amorim changed his routine after the defeat to Brighton, addressing his players immediately in the dressing room rather than waiting until the next day for a debrief.
There are reports that the former Sporting CP coach was so angry that he damaged a television.
"I'm a young man and sometimes I make mistakes," Amorim said. "That's why I (usually) don't talk after games. This game, I needed to talk and maybe it was a mistake and then I got more nervous and went to the (press) conference and was really nervous to say something about myself Don't say things you shouldn't say, that's it, sometimes I'm a young man and I make mistakes.
"I'm saying the obvious. I can be delusional and say something different if you want. I said it to the players and I said it to you, I think it's a good thing to be honest with you."
United face Rangers at Old Trafford on Thursday having lost four of their past five home games.
Amorim's side have enjoyed strong performances at Liverpool and Arsenal during this period and he admits his players currently find away games easier.
"I can say different things and say no, no, it's the same thing and we have the support of the fans," he said.
"No, our home games are tighter than our away games. We have lost four out of five games, so the games are getting more and more difficult. But we can improve. If we don't have the likes of the fourth, 10th or Suffering the loss of the first goal like that in the 15th minute is indeed difficult for the team to calm down.
"My first thought is that they can't score and we need to get the first goal. If we get the first goal I think things will change and we will improve. That's very clear. We really "There's a lot of anxiety, especially playing at home. It's getting harder and harder for everyone to play at Old Trafford."
United have conceded the first goal in each of their last five games at Old Trafford against Nottingham Forest, Bournemouth, Newcastle, Southampton and Brighton.
They have also conceded goals for the first time since early December against Arsenal, Vittoria Plzen, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Wolves.
"The first goal against Forest was a set-piece, against Bournemouth, these are not tactical issues, it's concentration," Harry Maguire said. "We didn't have the focus to make sure we went all the way. We knew things could turn and tomorrow (against Rangers) was an opportunity to get a win and then go into Sunday (against Fulham)."
