Rosanna Norton, who won an Oscar for the costume design of Tron in 1982 and designed Sissy Spacek's iconic prom gown for Carrie, died in Los Angeles on May 7. She is 80 years old.
Her early costume design honors include Terrence Malick's Badlands, Brian de Palma's Carrie and Paradise of Heaven.
"We don't have money," she recalled in a video interview, saying she found many prom costumes in a store in the valley. But her tailor customizes Carrie's simple pale pink satin dress to the color of the tailor, changing the color from the original red in the book for a more stunning contrast, which contrasts with the blood splashed in space.
"At the time, there were prom dresses and bridesmaid dresses, things were very picky. They had all these ruffles and details, and I wanted to do.... The prejudiced clothes, I wish it was really simple and looked like she could have done it herself," she told the Birth Movie. "It doesn't have a lot of ruffles or details to work. It's a classic 1930s prejudiced tailoring. I want her to look like everyone else, only beautiful people, and all the other girls, they look like teenage girls wearing this kind of ruffles, fancy, gathering dress."
Norton is a lifelong Angeleno who met her husband, Bill Norton, while attending UCLA at UCLA. Norton is a writer and director of Cisco Pike, where she serves as a production designer and costume designer.
She joined the Association of Directors of Clothing in 1975 and continued to mentor many members of the Guild.
Norton explained his luck in connecting with the director in a guild statement, saying: “I was originally a painter, but I was lucky to have some really good photos through my friendship with directors Brian De Palma and Terry Malick.”
Among her more than 50 film honors, highlights include "Statman" and "Tron", for which she shared the honors with Elois Jenssen and was nominated for the Academy Award in 1983, as well as a live action version of "Flintstones."
Norton's honors also include "Brady Bunch Movies", "Innerspace", "Airplane!" and "Airplane II", "Robocop 2", "Casper", "Patriot" and "'bubbs".
After retiring as a fashion designer, Norton returned to painting.
She has two children and five grandchildren.
