Rian Johnson wants "Knife Out 3" to be released in many theaters

Rian Johnson recently told Business Insider while promoting Season 2 of “Poker Faces”, he hopes that his next “Wake Up Dead Man” will be released in as many theaters as possible. Whether Netflix will achieve this wish later this year remains to be seen. Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos caused controversy online, calling the movie theater models "outdated".

"Obviously I don't (agree)," Johnson said when asked to respond to Sarandos' comments. "I love movies. I love watching movies. But, I have a feeling of talking to Ted, which is different from a sentence recorded in this case and a sentence abandoned to me.

"I don't think drama is going to go to anything," the filmmaker added. "I think we've seen if you want people to want to watch movies in theaters, they're going to be in theaters, and it's very important to have experiences throughout the house and have that experience. It's something I love, I want more in the world."

Sarandos appeared at the Time100 summit last month and noted: "We are in a transitional period. People grow up thinking, 'I want to make movies on huge screens, have strangers watch them (and have them in the theater) play in the theater for two months, people cry and sell out shows'... It's an outdated concept."

When asked about the desire of filmmakers to make a movie “for the cinema, for the public experience” was “an outdated idea,” Sarandos said, “I think for most people, it’s for most people, not everyone. If you’re lucky enough to live in Manhattan, you can walk into a multiple movie and watch a great movie. It’s a great country.” ”

Breaking the tradition with the 2022 release of “Glass Onion: A Knives Outsing”, Netflix teamed up with a major theater chain like AMC to release a wider dramatic release for the first time with a Johnson-directed sequel. The film was played in 600 movie theaters nationwide for a week, about a month ago. Netflix has since not reached a similar deal with a major theater chain, although it is working with IMAX to get Greta Gerwig's Narnia Chronicles of Narnia Chronicles released for a 2026 drama release on Thanksgiving. "Narnia" will play on IMAX screen for two weeks before making its Christmas debut on Netflix.

"I want this movie in as many theaters as possible," Johnson said of the third "Knife" movie. "We're going to try to get everything from drama because I want as many people to see it in that form."

Johnson once again wrote and directed: "Awakening the Dead: The Mystery of a Knife". Daniel Craig returns to Detective Benoit Blanc, becoming a new mystery, which includes actors Josh O'Connor, Glenn Close, Josh Brolin, Mila Kunis, Jeremy Renner, Jeremy Renner, Kerry Washington, Andrew Scott, Cailee Spaeny, Daryl McCormack and Thomas Haden Church. The film will debut in the fall.
