We now know the hottest baseball team going into the final week of the regular season – and it’s not who you think.
Cumberland brought its double-digit win streak to Hendricken on Saturday and made sure it didn’t stop. Liam Monahan threw a gem and Ryan Harris’ bases-clearing double provided the insurance the Clippers needed to hold off the Hawks and pull out a 4-3 win.
Riding a 10-game win streak against a Hendricken team fresh off a loss to La Salle – its second L in three games after an undefeated start – Cumberland showed up ready to play ball and no one was more ready than Monahan.
The junior right-hander was dominant from the start, keeping the Hawks guessing all afternoon. He gave up just two hits in the first six innings and had no issue letting his teammates make plays behind him.
Cumberland gave Monahan a 1-0 lead in the second inning on an Owen Koczera RBI single. The lead remained their heading to the seventh, when the Clippers loaded the bases with two outs. Harris stepped up next and hit a double for a 4-0 lead that looked insurmountable.
Hendricken had other ideas.
Cooper Maher opened the inning with a single and, after a one-out single by Jacob Montenegro, scored on a single by Mason Crain. With two outs, Parker Boyd came through with an RBI single, bringing the go-ahead run to the plate.
Monahan bore down and induced a grounder to first to end the game. He finished his afternoon giving up six hits, three walks and striking out four.
Dylan Poloski had a strong game on the mound for Hendricken, giving up four hits and walking two in the loss. Crain had two hits for the Hawks.
Luke Wesner dominated in his six-plus innings of work and Drew Algava led the offense that found ways to get runs across in a 5-0 win over the Patriots.
Wesner picked a great day to have his best performance of the season. The Moses Brown sophomore threw 6 1/3 innings of four-hit ball, walking one and striking out six before handing the ball over to the bullpen for the final two outs.
The Quakers gave Wesner all the support he needed in the first inning on an RBI single from Brayden Menard and a two-out bunt single by Algava. Moses Brown pulled off a successful double steal for a run in the second and Algava bunted home another run in the fifth.
Algava finished with two RBI and Will Haggerty scored two runs. Menard finished with two hits for the Quakers.
Avery Amaio did what he could to get the Portsmouth offense, going 3-for-3 in the loss.
Joshua Gillen’s RBI single broke up a tie game and Ethan Torres made sure the lead stuck in the Thunderbolts’ 5-2 win over the Panthers.
Johnston, which plays in Division II, jumped out early with a first-inning RBI single by Matt Clements and an RBI single by Jayvin Adamo in the second inning.
Cranston East rallied in the bottom of the fourth, scoring its first run on a passed ball and putting runners in the corners for Gillen. Smerlyn Lopez stole second and two pitches later, Jeu Leon scored the tying run on a passed ball.
Gillen followed with a single that plated Lopez for a 3-2 lead.
Cranston East added two more in the fifth, but the runs weren’t necessary. Torres came in for starter Edward McClung and was lights out, pitching three innings of no-hit ball with one walk while striking out three. McClung earned the victory, giving up two runs and six hits with five strikeouts in four innings, with Torres getting the save.
Anders Nelson played the role of hero, hitting an RBI single in the seventh inning to give the Avengers a 6-5 walk-off win over the Titans.
The way the game started, it didn’t look like it would get to that point as East Greenwich scored three in the second and led 5-1 after three innings. Toll Gate climbed back quick, getting three runs in the fourth before Connor Salzillo tied the game with an RBI single in the fifth inning.
Tied at 5 heading to the bottom of the seventh, Brady O’Brien worked a walk to start the inning and Alex Tullo followed with a double. Toll Gate intentionally walked Miles Doman to load the bases and Nelson made the Titans pay with a single that scored pinch-runner Nolan Malafronte with the winning run.
Nelson finished the game with two hits, the one RBI and one run. Nolan Colucci scored twice in the win.
Salzillo was strong in defeat, going 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run.
The start of the game was wild, but the end in extra inning was crazier before Kaden Osenkowski’s grounder in the 13th inning gave the Crusaders a 7-6 walk-off win.
Prout and Middletown started the game on April 28, with the Crusaders scoring four times in the seventh to tie the game at five. The game was paused after the eighth inning due to darkness.
The two teams got together on Saturday and started in the top of the ninth. After three scoreless innings, Evan Agren’s fielder’s choice put the Islanders ahead.
In the bottom of the inning, Matt Chofay led off with a double and after two outs, stood on third before scoring the tying run on a passed ball.
Prout held Middletown scoreless in the top of the 13th, then went to work in the bottom half. Cam Randall opened the inning with a single, moved to second on a bunt and then third on an error. Osenkowski ended things there, hitting a ball to second with Randall beating the throw home for the winning run.
Andrew Nowell started the re-start and threw four strong innings for Prout, with Osenkowski pitching the final inning to grab the win.
Chofay had a big game – or games? – in the two-day affair, going 2-for-5 with three RBI and three runs. Evan Lavasseur led Middletown’s offense with two runs and one RBI.
Gavyn Pepler’s fifth-inning homer broke a tie game and propelled the Chargers to a 6-3 win over the Crusaders.
Offense was tough to come by for Chariho and Prout, who were tied at one heading to the fifth. The Chargers started to rally with one out and had two runners on with two out when Pepler stepped to the play. He took the first pitch for a ball and hammered the second pitch to deep right for a 4-1 lead.
Chariho added two more in the sixth inning, which gave it necessary breathing room after the Crusaders - who finished a continued game earlier in the day - put up two runs with two outs in the seventh.
Pepler’s big day ended with him going 2-for-3 with four RBI and one run and he also threw four innings of one-run ball with eight strikeouts. Rohan Downing scored two runs in the win and Gavin Apice had two hits.
Reid Klug drove in one run and scored once for the Crusaders.
Jackson DiFillippo flipped the scoreboard for good and Keller Prendergast bounced back after a tough first inning to make sure it didn’t change hands in the Mariners’ 6-3 win over the Scarlet Knights.
Exeter-West Greenwich, which plays in Division III, got off to the start it was looking for when it scored the first run on a passed ball and Kole Kilduff ripped an RBI single for a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
Narragansett scored in the bottom half and then changed the lead for good in the second. With runners on second and third and one out, DiFillippo hit a two-run single to give the Mariners the lead before Jackson Hohl made it 4-2 after scoring on a passed ball.
Prendergast took over from there. He kept EWG off the scoreboard and finished the day throwing 5 2/3 innings, giving up five hits and two earned runs with four strikeouts. Aidan Clancey got the last four outs of the game to earn the save.
DiFillippo and Vita Paglia had two RBI in the win and Hohl scored three runs for Narragansett.
Kilduff finished his afternoon with two RBI for EWG.
Patrick Munger was on top of his game and the Villa Novans gave him five runs in the first that weren’t all needed in a 10-0 win over the Northmen.
All the support Munger needed came when he was drilled by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring in the game’s first run. Jullian DeJesus followed with an RBI single and Braylon Guilbeault’s double brought home three more.
The only thing that prevented Munger from throwing a complete-game shutout was the 10-run rule. Munger threw all five innings, giving up just one hit with zero walks while striking out seven.
Guilbeault led the offense, going 2-for-2 with four RBI. Joe Greenless scored three runs, Nick Levereault drove home a pair and Chris Bousquet and Munger scored twice.
The Knights took advantage of miscues in a big second inning that sparked an 8-5 win over the Vikings.
Providence Country Day led 1-0 after the first, but tacked on four as Rogers’ pitchers struggled with the zone. Max Tuthill added to the lead with an RBI single in the third and the Knights cruised the rest of the way.
Ryan Duclos led PCD’s offense, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run. Talon Botelho scored three runs and Corey Robinson-Baker and Tyler Stanzione both had one RBI and one run.
Cole Milburn led Rogers, going 2-for-3 with one RBI. Trenton Carter finished 2-for-4 with one run and Colby Schreiber scored twice.

Amelia Fries got the scoring started with her legs and ended with her bat, leading a trio of Skippers who bashed all day long in a 12-2 win over the Quakers.
Moses Brown took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, but Fries cut the deficit in half after scoring on a passed ball in the top of the second before North Kingstown added another run to tie the game.
Fries was hardly done. Her RBI single in the third put the Skippers up for good in the third, which ended with NK up 4-2. North Kingstown continued to pound the ball, getting a home run from Ella Mezzanotte in the seventh that made it 11-2 before Fries’ RBI single accounted for the final run.
It was a big day for Fries, who went 3-for-3 with three RBI and two runs. Mezzanotte also had three hits, drove in three and scored twice and Mia D’Andrea went 3-for-3 with three RBI and two runs.
Gianna Amedeo threw five innings of solid ball, giving up four hits and two runs while striking out four to pick up the win.
The Sentinels came off the bus hitting, scoring seven in the first and putting things away in the second with seven more in a 17-2 win over the Bengals.
With a second game – or at least part of one – scheduled for later in the afternoon, Smithfield made sure it would be plenty rested. Mia Howard drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly, which was followed by a two-run double from Sophia Parrillo, who later scored on a wild pitch. Madison Kennedy and Ava Lopez both drove home runs in the inning and Joy Matterson scored on a passed ball to make it 7-0 before Smithfield had a chance to take the field.
In the bottom half, the Sentinels scored seven more and the game ended after four innings due to the 12-run rule.
Lopez was a beast, going 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs. Parrillo was 2-for-2 with three RBI and three runs and Kennedy went 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run. Matteson and Maddie Bose both scored twice in the win.
Picking up on a game that was paused due to darkness, the Sentinels – who played a full game earlier in the day – made sure it didn’t get close to happening again as Olivia Keene’s grounder allowed Crystal Cacador to scamper home in time to pick up a 6-5, 11-inning win over the Oakers.
The two teams met on Tuesday and played 10 full innings before the game was called due to darkness. Coventry started the 11th with a runner on second, but Smithfield catcher Lily Riggin threw her out stealing third and Cacador got a pair of strikeouts to end top half.
Cacador started the 11th on second base and took third after a Riggin single. After a strikeout, Coventry intentionally walked Sophia Parillo to load the bases. Keene followed, hitting a ball to short that gave Cacador just enough time to slide in with the winning run.
Mia Crudale was practically untouchable in the circle and the Falcons scrapped up enough offense to pull out the 4-0 win over the Panthers.
Crudale, a Second Team All State selection last spring, had a tough matchup against Johnston Second Team All Stater Haley Boudreau, but had her stuff working early. The senior was dominant from the start and threw seven innings of two-hit ball, walking one and striking out 14.
Mia Santomassimo drove home the only run Crudale needed with a triple in the second inning. Cranston West took advantage of Johnston errors to get two more runs in the fourth before Siena Nardelli added an RBI single in the sixth.
Boudreau fared well against a Division I opponent, giving up six hits and two earned runs while striking out 10 in her six innings of work.
Ana Pearce came through with a big hit and then made a bigger defensive play, helping the Crusaders hold on for a 6-5 win over the Bulldogs.
Westerly led 3-2 going into the bottom of the fourth when Pearce struck with a double to tie the game, followed by a two-run single by Emma Manzo. Mia Boyajian added an RBI single later in the inning and Prout took a 6-2 lead into the seventh.
The Bulldogs started a rally and a two-out, two-run single by Lyla Auth made it a one-run game. Pearce made sure it stopped there, throwing out the courtesy runner at second base on a steal attempt to end the game.
Rachel Dias had a nice day at the plate for Prout, going 2-for-3 with two RBI. Manzo drove in two and scored twice in the win.
Auth had a strong day in defeat, going 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Freshmen Sydney Marchand and Brooke Tillson both hit home runs as the Lions’ bats roared in a 14-0 win over the Broncos.
Lincoln opened the game with five runs in the first inning and Tillson added to the lead with a solo home run in the third. Leading 10-0 in the fourth, Marchand put an exclamation point on the win with a grand slam that brought the 12-run rule into play.
Marchand finished her day 2-for-4 with four RBI and two runs. Tillson was 1-for-3 with three RBI and one run. Brielle Lambert, a sophomore, went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI and Lucia Whyte had herself a day as well, going 3-for-4 with two runs. Charlotte Labossiere and Alicia Valois both scored two runs in the win.
London Rapko pitched all four innings and gave up one hit to pick up the victory.
In a close game at halftime, the Quakers turned on the jets in the second half and ran away with a 20-7 win over the Clippers.
Cumberland arrived on the East Side ready to battle and went into halftime trailing 8-5. Things didn’t stay close much longer as Moses Brown dominated the final two quarters to pull out the running-clock win.
Cam Danchak was the main culprit for the Quakers, scoring six goals to go with two assists. Peter Sarnowski scored five and had two assists and Reece Chase scored three goals. Hugo Harrell added a pair in the win.
Lyric Picard was singing the right song for the Chieftains’ offense as they rolled to a 9-2 win over the Broncos.
Picard led the way for Ponaganset, scoring four goals in the win. Johnny Baumann scored three times for the Chieftains and Brady Sirois scored the other two.
Darren Brum scored both goals for Burrillville.
