Carrara's connection to anarchism began about 150 years ago when the ideal of anarchist found fertile ground among oppressed workers in marble quarries. Led by Alberto Meschi, Carrara's Quarlymen became the first Italian to win six and a half hours of workdays in the early 20th century. Anarchist circles and collectives appear in almost every town and community in the Carrara region. In Gragnana, a village of "Errico Malatesta", the oldest anarchist circle in Italy, was established in 1885 and is still in operation today.
Rosmunda said: “I am one of those people who love this town and hope it will flourish.
Only a small portion of the marble ticking profits are now flowing to municipalities, while social housing in Carrara and surrounding villages are insufficient, depriving health and parenting services and failures in public transport.
"It's hard - without social welfare, public services are disintegrating," Rosemonda said. "The wealth (from marble) falls in very few hands."
Sculptor Chantal Stropeni added: "Carrara is a paradox. There is a huge wealth - marble - but deep poverty, and even among artists, we have formed a collective sculpture studio called Ponte di Ferro. We have 14 people here who have different behaviors. Advantage: No one pays attention, no one asks questions."
Meanwhile, the mountains are disappearing - between 4 million and 5 million tons per year. The town is getting poorer. Automation replaces many quarry jobs such as dicing, drilling, splitting, chisels and material removal. In recent years, local jobs have dropped from 800 to 600.
But the resistance in the region has a long legacy. "We have been working to reduce the impact of the extraction system - organizing events, protests, speeches and legal actions -" for more than 30 years," said Paola Antonioli, president of the Italian environmental nonprofit Legambiente Carrara. " "Of course, this road is very long. But something is changing. The collective consciousness begins to awaken. ”
This formed a new force for the Future Carrara on Friday in 2019, a role model raised by environmental athlete Greta Thunberg and protests were held in town on Friday.
