Republicans took a big blow to expanding the Senate majority on Monday, with Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp campaigning for the party’s top target through Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff.
As reported by Bridget Bowman and Sahil Kapur, Kemp is seen as the Republican main recruit in Georgia, one of two state presidents Donald Trump brought in 2024 in 2024 with his Democrat-held Senate seat in 2026. The other is Michigan, Michigan, where Democratic Senator Gary Peters retires.
background: Kemp showed a rare ability to attract conservatives and midway voters.
Trump supports former Senator David Perdue in the 2022 Republican gubernatorial primary after Kemp opposes efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. But Kemp easily beat Perdue, and then Joe Biden won nearly eight points for Stacey Abrams just two years after becoming the first Democrat to appoint Georgia in the presidential election since 1992.
Plan B: It is unclear what Kemp will be next, as he will not be able to seek reelection next year due to term limits. But his decision to abandon the Senate campaign could trigger a crowded and competitive Republican primary to replace Ossoff.
Several members of the Georgia congressional delegation, including multiple members of Buddy Carter, Rich McCormick, Mike Collins and Marjorie Taylor Greene, suggested that they would consider bidding if Kemp doesn't run.
Green told NBC News last week that she was weighing the Senate. “I only have a lot of choices to be open to me,” she said.
Among other statewide elected Republicans, agriculture commissioner Tyler Harper and insurance commissioner John King are also seen as potential candidates.
map: Ultimately, the Georgia seat may be more important for Democrats to try to eat the Republican 53-47 majority. In addition to Michigan, Democrats also have open seats in Minnesota and New Hampshire. The party's offensive opportunities are relatively limited, with Susan Collins of Maine and Thom Tillis of North Carolina being regarded as the most vulnerable Republicans.

In the house: Rep. Jan Schakowsky, D-ill. It was announced that she would not seek reelection next year after 14 semesters in the House of Representatives. The 26-year-old internet personality Kat Abughazaleh has competed in Schakowsky's safe Democratic seat.
Adipact, the ad tracking company, said that the Department of Homeland Security is praising Donald Trump's secretary for Kristi Noem and calling on U.S. immigrants to illegally call for "leave now", a large sum of funds so far - nearly $21 million so far.
According to Adipact, this is a sum that is consistent with what the statewide campaign may cost. By comparison, liberal candidate Susan Crawford spent $28 million on advertising, while conservative candidate Brad Schimel spent $15 million in the Wisconsin Supreme Court election, which he watched closely last month. In last year's election, Pennsylvania Republican Dave McCormick spent $21 million on one of the most competitive Senate games on the battlefield map.
The vast majority of DHS attractions speak directly to the camera with Nome, touting Trump and warning: "If you are illegal here, we will find you and we will deport you. You will never return. However, if you leave now, you may have a chance to return."
Other changes include the explosion of "weak politicians" in Noem to leave "our borders open", while others speak English in Spanish subtitles.
Other more targeted ads show Noem detailing “illegal foreigners caught due to President Trump’s leadership.” Some attractions also include footage of the arrest and her visit to the El Salvador prison, where she was deported.
These ads are widely targeted at news broadcasts, such as morning and night news programs on large broadcast networks and Spanish-language channels.

Federal Healthcare Exchange Healthcare. The Biden administration also spent $50 million to point out how the 2021 Covid relief law creates new subsidies for health insurance.
However, the new Department of Homeland Security advertising campaign is particularly noteworthy that Noem is South Dakota Governor Noem who may have a long political career in front of her at the age of 53.
