Bangkok - An resistance group and media reported that the Myanmar military airstrike in a village in the central Sagan region of the country hit a school on Monday, aid workers and media reported that as many as 20 students and two teachers were killed.
They said a morning attack on Ohe Htein Twin Village in Tabayin Township, also known as DePayin, also injured dozens of students.
Neither the military government nor the state-controlled media released any information about the reported ones.
The military increasingly uses air strikes to oppose a widespread armed struggle against its rule, which began in February 2021 when it seized power from the government of the democratically elected government, Aung San Suu Kyi. According to data compiled by NGOs, it is estimated that more than 6,600 civilians are estimated to be killed by security forces.
A fighter jet threw bombs directly to a school where many students from elementary to high school are studying about 115 kilometers (70 miles) of the area after 9 a.m., a member of the white Depeyin People's Defense Forces Resistance group fighting Army rule told the Associated Press that a fighter jet threw the bomb directly to a school where many students from elementary to high school are studying about 115 kilometers (70 miles) of the area's second largest city in Mandalay Mandala.
Resistance fighters rushed to the attack site to help the victims, and he spoke on anonymity because he was afraid of being arrested by the military. He said 20 students and two teachers were killed in the attack on the school, which was run by the country's pro-democracy movement and about 50 were injured. Three nearby houses were damaged.
He also said that although Sagaing was a stronghold of the resistance movement, there was no recent battle in the area.
Nay Phone Latt, a spokesman for the opposition’s National Solidarity Government, told the Associated Press that he received the same information about casualties and the death toll could increase. The group is the main opposition that coordinates resistance to military rule.
He accused the military of deliberately attacking civilians in monasteries, refugee camps, schools and hospitals on the pretext of resistance fighters as shelter in such places, and although this is not the case, the bomb attack was intended to free people from the resistance movement.
The death toll from Monday's bombing, reported by independent Myanmar media, ranged from 17 to more than 20.
Near the border between Sagaing and India, it has always been a stronghold of armed resistance. In recent years, the military has carried out air strikes on the local pro-democratic defense force. Resistance has no effective defense against air strikes.
In September 2022, military helicopters launched an air attack on a school and village in Let Kone Village in the same township, killing at least 13 people, including seven children.
In April 2023, the air strike killed up to 160 people, including many children, who participated in a ceremony ruled by the opposition army outside the village of Pazigyi in the town of Kanbalu, Sagaing area.
The air strikes in Myanmar have attracted attention recently as the United Nations and human rights groups believe that military and resistance groups have announced a ceasefire to facilitate rescue efforts after the devastating earthquake in Myanmar.
