Reducing anti-Semitism in the United States requires not only condemning opposition to Israel and targeting elite universities

Violent anti-Semitism in the United States is not limited to the far right in the political arena. This is sad in two recent events - on June 1, 2025, burning participants in a boulder, Colorado, using a molotov cocktail.

As a Middle East expert, including Israel, my research and administration include contributing to global efforts to define anti-Semitism and address anti-Semitism on my own campus.

Anti-Semitism can be simply defined as "discriminatory, prejudiced, hostile, or violent Jewish (or Jewish institutions are Jewish)." What actually constitutes is more controversial, especially regarding the connection between the Jews and the State of Israel.

President Donald Trump claims he is taking "unprecedented" steps to fight anti-Semitism.

Since 2016, American Jews have believed anti-Semitism is on the rise, mainly because, as one study says, “people who now hold anti-Semitism now express them more freely.” However, the current struggle for anti-Semitism in the United States may be related to the agenda of members of the U.S. and Israeli governments, rather than the concerns of most American Jews.

First, the Trump administration’s attack on elite universities centers of anti-Semitism, with the president claiming anti-Semitism rampant. Second, the current Israeli government seeks to blur the line between pro-Palestinian activism and anti-Semitism.

These factors polarize and make the landscape effective against anti-Semitism.

Remarks targeting universities by charging “anti-Semitism”

Trump's administration has taken dramatic action in the name of curbing anti-Semitism. However, his policies are what they ignore and what they aim to do.

Right-wing anti-Semitism is aimed at causing the deadliest attack on the Jewish community in Pittsburgh's American history in 2018. However, the government’s fighting pattern with anti-Semitism was not based on fighting hatred against white supremacists of Jews, which was related to Jews, which was related to the Nazis in Germany.

In fact, Trump administration members and government efficiency secretary Elon Musk, including senior adviser Stephen Miller, support white supremacist ideas or groups. Trump’s own words evoke anti-Semitism from the right, such as assuming that American Jews are loyal to Israel or are good at making money.

Trump administration policy on anti-Semitism is the most voice of leading American universities that punish Jews for insecurity. As the main target of presidential anger, Harvard University acknowledged that radicalism in Israel’s war with Hamas in Gaza contributed to anti-Semitism on campus.

However, federal action towards Harvard University ostensibly attempts to punish anti-Semitism by requiring federal oversight of Harvard's curriculum and autonomy. Billions of dollars in research funding have been cut. Neither action is clearly associated with Harvard’s model or anti-Semitism policies.

In view of this, Harvard sued the government in April.

Many American Jews believe that Trump’s real purpose is to use the issue of anti-Semitism as a means to curb free expression in universities.

Defend Israeli policy by charging "anti-Semitism"

Governments naturally seek political and material support from powerful allies. Israel encourages Americans to advocate for efforts to support this model.

Israel receives more U.S. aid than any other country. Therefore, its governments are interested in recruiting diverse people and organizations in a continuous way that supports their policies.

Israeli interventions continue to evolve as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's far-right government is not popular in Israel and the U.S. war in Gaza.

Now, most experts and policy makers believe that Israel, together with Hamas, committed international war crimes.

The Israeli government recently increased its funding to $150 million for global public relations efforts. This is the main acceleration of the policy that Israel has pursued for decades in Hebrew, which translates into "interpretation".

It can be difficult to document specific links between the Israeli government and the groups that promote their U.S. agenda. This may be the intentional strategy of Israeli leaders to cover up their efforts.

However, since Hamas triggered the Gaza War, mainstream Israel such as Jewish institutions have been linked by organizations such as Jewish institutions. Groups with difficult funding and leadership abilities to track public blacklists as vocals of villains. These lists have been used by Israeli government bureaucrats to visit tourists in the country.

American groups consistent with news from the Israeli government have participated in an ongoing strategy to discredit opposition voices. Some attacked open voice activists, including some American Jews. Other people’s news organizations, political institutions and institutions adopt an anti-Semitism definition that combines criticism of Israel’s policy with anti-Semitism.

The U.S. anti-Israel behavior in the United States can be anti-Semitism, such as asserting that American Jews are Jewish, because they are Jewish, and are acting for the Israeli state. Some American Jews support the repression of pro-Palestinian activists.

However, in the United States, anti-Semitism is characterized primarily by rhetoric and activism targeting the Israeli government, strengthening the Trump administration’s neglect of dangerous right-wing anti-Semitism.

Polarization and anti-Semitism in the United States

To sum up, the politics pursued by Trump and Netanyahu administrations combine with speech legally protected in the United States rather than preventing anti-Semitism.

By promoting polarization, the mix of anti-Semitism and widespread rhetoric criticizing Israel may increase the threats faced by Jews and other religious minorities. Those who hope to undermine the Palestine-Israel coexistence benefit from the allegations that most pro-Palestinian activists are anti-Semitists. This has already linked American Jewish abuse in how Israeli abuses Palestinians and Jewish identity.

With the support of the most aggressive pro-Natanihu, the Trump administration has linked concerns about anti-Semitism with efforts to expel immigrants who have emerged with pro-Plastine views, such as Tuft’s PhD student rümeysaöztürk. Exiting people in the name of policing rhetoric criticizing Israel also took risks, with Jews going to be blamed for government actions, which many Americans find objectionable.

Let us know. With the attacks in Washington and Boulder, some pro-Palestinian activism embraced the Jews. But, like the current U.S. and Israeli leaders, blending the closest speech into one, makes it clear to anti-Semitism and oppose anti-Semitism.

Furthermore, most Americans – and Israelis – seek to end the war and exacerbate deaths and humanitarian disasters in Gaza. Any potential for ambiguity with anti-Semitism can enhance several loud American voices by humanizing the other side, which support one side of the conflict.

Americans believe that other minorities face greater discrimination than Jews. However, anti-Semitism from different directions is the worst of my life.

As with any policy issue, the approach to this is to focus on all aspects of the issue, including right-wing racism and Christian nationalism.

The current state politics surrounding anti-Semitism may have many purposes. However, most American Jews suspect that these policies actually protect them.
