Reddit now allows you to hide content from your user profile, such as posts and comments

Reddit announced a new feature on Tuesday that will provide users with more privacy to share on their user profiles.

The company said it will launch an update that will introduce a "Content and Activity" setting that allows users to determine which content from the sublists they participate in will appear on their profile. This includes their posting and comment history.

By default, all posts and comments will be as visible as before. However, the new setting allows users to hide all their public posts and comments, including public posts and comments made directly on their profile.

Additionally, users can decide to selectively display posts and comments from specific communities on their profile while hiding others.

This setting is found under the new Curate Your Profile section where users can control the visibility of their content. You can also use the option to switch NSFW content and activity, followers toggle to show or hide follower counts.

The update adds a layer of privacy to Reddit, which was not available before.

Previously, many Reddit users created a "throwing" account when they wanted to ask more personal questions. But as Reddit becomes more focused tech companies for IPOs, it may prefer that user data (such as engagement and interests) are associated with individual user profiles for better ad targeting.

The addition of this feature can also encourage users to engage more on the website, as they now know that they can cover up their activities from a public perspective.

For example, users may want to introduce or ask about a more sensitive topic, such as relationship or dating advice, or the health issues they face. Previously, they might have chosen to read only other people’s posts rather than directly involved in order to prevent the information from showing their own user profile.

The option to hide or show posts and comments is only available in each community, not at a single post or comment level, Reddit said. Even if you can't choose which specific comments and posts appear, these settings are easier to manage.

However, users should know that planning options do not mean they have real privacy. Their username will still appear next to posts and comments from the community itself. Additionally, some hosts can still access the user's public posts and comment history for 28 days regardless of the user's content visibility settings.

This visit is helpful for hosts who may need to view the user's history when posting or commenting, as well as sending a "modmail" (such as joining a request) or joining a restricted community request.

The company notes that if another user comments directly on his profile post, the profile owner will also be able to temporarily view the user's full post and comment history.

In addition to this change, Reddit introduces an updated summary of personal activities that outlines the user's activities, including their karma count, total contribution, account age, and active community. The latter will be based on its content and activity settings.
