Resuming action to boost late tech tycoon Mike Lynch’s Superyacht Bayesian was suspended from the seabed in Sicily, after a diver died at underwater work.
Dutch diver Rob Cornelis Maria Huijben, 39, died Friday while preparing to cut mainstream on the ship. He was employed by the maritime company Hebo, whose barge arrived at Porticello, a fishing port near Palermo last week. Luxury vessels attacked Porticello's luxury vessel shortly before the storm on August 19, 2024. It sank in seconds, killing seven people, including Lynch and his daughter Hannah.
Police said the cause of the diver's death was not clear and investigated.
"This pause in the event is necessary to complete the investigation and allow all rescue and related teams to mourn the tragic loss of the respected rescue divers during yesterday's underwater work." A statement from the UK-based consulting firm TMC Marine, which will be a member of the Salvage experts who oversee the project.
A preliminary examination of the diver's body showed no obvious injury or burns. Investigators believe he may have suffered medical problems when he was inundated.
Another question is that Huijben is hit by displaced debris - possibly a piece of metal after divers used blowtorns to cut the boat's boom. Shortly before the incident, video footage captured by underwater cameras.
Marcus Cave, head of naval construction and head of the Marine Corps, said Friday’s tragedy “is felt by everyone involved in the project, and the priority now is the expert, the family of expert divers, who has been loved by all the participation of the project and has indeed been subject to all the temporary participation of all the participation. This work will enable a thorough investigation of the operation to complete this thorough accident.
"Our idea is with everyone affected. There are always risks in the rescue operations at sea." "The salvage team is providing the authorities with comprehensive cooperation."
Further project updates will be released after the weekend.
Investigators hope the yacht will produce important clues: whether a series of human errors leads to the sinking of initial suspicion, or whether other factors are at play. Once ashore, the inspection will determine if one of the hatches remains open and if the keel is inappropriate.
Lynch was dismissed last June of the U.S. fraud charges sold to Hewlett-Packard in 2011 with his company Automony, who enjoyed a luxurious voyage around Sicily to celebrate his acquittal with 18-year-old Hannah and his wife Angela Bacares, whose company owns Bayesians.

On board included Clifford Chance's attorney Chris Morvillo, his wife, jewelry designer Neda Morvillo, chairman of Morgan Stanley International, Jonathan Bloomer and his wife Judy Bloomer, a former psychotherapist. The four people died in the incident. The yacht chef Recaldo Thomas is the seventh man to die.
15 people survived, including Bacares.
The wreckage is located at a depth of 50 meters from Porticello Bay, which is under surveillance by Italian authorities.
The insurance company estimates that salvage will cost about $30 million (£23 million) and Bayesian underwriters will receive a bill.
