Newlyweds Jonathan Joss and Tristan Kern de Gonzales held each other at the last minute together on Sunday.
Joss is a 59-year-old voice actor, most famously John Redcorn, of the "King of the Mountains", who was just shot dead in front of San Antonio, Texas.
"I didn't want him to struggle and everything, so I decided to tell him that I love him. Even though everything was serious, he was able to look up at me and admit what I was saying, so I knew he heard me." "I kept telling him 'It's okay. You need to go over. You don't need to keep struggling. You need to keep struggling. You need to keep struggling.'"
Kern de Gonzales said Joss' so-called killer also had a last word for the actor. He called him and his husband "Jotos" a Spanish slander for homosexuals.
"I was called the word when I sat on Jonathan's bench and had lunch," Kern de Gonzales said. "And I was called when Jonathan died."
Shortly thereafter, police arrested their neighbor Sigfredo Alvarez Ceja for the killing of Joss.
Kern de Gonzales said he believes Ceja, 56, killed her husband due to her sexual orientation. But the San Antonio Police Department said there is no evidence that Jos' killing was motivated by hatred. Authorities have not disclosed their motivation or other details of their investigation into the shooting.
Police records obtained by NBC News and an interview with Kern de Gonzales, the two’s neighbors portrayed the complexities that led to the tragic killing of voice actors.
Ceja cannot be contacted for comment. He has not obtained an attorney yet, according to the Bexar County District Clerk’s Office.
Kern de Gonzalez, who has lived in her husband's childhood home since March 2024, said he and Joss have frequently contradicted neighbors, including Ceja in recent years.
He claimed that many neighbors would throw anti-gay slander at them and complain about them being “loud”, making them feel unwelcome nearby.
Police were asked to respond to incidents at their homes more than four times, most of which were marked "harassment." According to a log obtained by NBC News, police were asked to respond to incidents at their homes more than four times, with most of the calls marked "harassment."
One of the couple's neighbors demanded that they would not share their names due to fear of revenge, saying Jos had a hard time living.
"He has been a nightmare," the neighbor said.
Kern de Gonzales admits that his husband tends to "sound loudly."
"Jonathan and I will play drums and sing late at night, which is annoying," said Kern de Gonzales. "If you're going to make it difficult for us to live here, you won't be able to sleep."
The couple's relationship with CEJA is particularly controversial.
A SAPD spokesman with NBC News confirmed that the police department’s “Saffe” unit aims to prevent crime and has been mediating the dispute between Ceja and Joss for more than a year.
According to another police report, in June 2024, Ceja told police that Jos approached his house with his cross feet and threw racial slander at him. Jos confirmed to police that he walked to Seja's home and "talk about their dogs fighting each other."
The report added that Jos "became very defensive and said he didn't bother with "ceja".
Police records say authorities later searched Joss' home and retrieved a cross from his living room.
Jos accused Seja of burning the house in January, according to police records.
Jos told police that on the morning of the fire, he used a barbecue in the living room because he had no heat or electricity. However, he said he closed the barbecue before leaving home for lunch.
He told police that an unnamed person saw Ceja on his property the day before and suggested Ceja be held accountable.
"I have classified the fire as uncertain yet, but human participation cannot be ruled out intentional or unintentional," the report reads.
Kern de Gonzales said the fire left them homeless. But that didn't stop them from getting married. They got married on Valentine's Day in Houston.
"It was a very good, simple ceremony, you know, it was just me and him and him, and it was really for us," he said. "We were very proud to get married."
Kern de Gonzales said he and his husband returned to their property Sunday to retrieve the email. When they arrived, he said they found a dog's skull on the property. The two believed that the skull belonged to their dogs, which died in the fire and were placed there by neighbors to laugh at them.
Kern de Gonzales said the incident prompted Joss to marching up and down their streets with a pitchfork and began yelling.
He said that a few minutes later, Ceja allegedly drove towards their property and shot Joss.
"If I or my husband had 50 pitchforks in each orifice of our body rolling up and down the street, I could give me two F----- S-less," he said. "It's OK."
