Realme's new phone changes color in the cold, but it won't last forever

Realme just launched 14 Pro phones in India, and they have a party trick: the phones can change color in the cold. Apart from this, there is a triple camera flash and triple IP rating to protect the phone from extreme water conditions.

Both the Realme 14 Pro and 14 Pro Plus share the color-sensitive technology, although it's limited to the Pearl White variant, while the Purple and Gray models are stuck in one awful color. Designed in collaboration with Danish studio Valeur Designers, the pearlescent phone uses thermochromic pigments that start out white but turn blue when the temperature drops below 16 degrees Celsius (about 61 degrees Fahrenheit), and when the temperature rises again It will reverse again.

Realme said that the lower the temperature, the faster the phone replacement speed. It's even possible to create short-lived patterns by cooling down only specific points, something Indian YouTubers have started enjoying testing.

It does come with an important warning in the fine print, though: "The cold-sensitive color change feature will gradually lose its effectiveness due to daily use and is not a quality issue." How long it lasts remains to be seen, but even Realme's own website only promises Effect "during initial use".

The color-changing design isn't the only weird thing about the 14 Pro series. The rear camera includes three independent flash modules, a design that Realme says "can automatically restore natural skin tones in low-light conditions." On the 14 Pro Plus, these flashes sit between the three camera lenses, although the 14 Pro's flash is a bit faster and includes both rear cameras and a third circle that looks like just a lens but is actually empty.

The Realme 14 Pro looks to have three rear cameras, but looks can be deceiving.

It's also the latest phone to come with an IP69 rating, which makes it resistant to dust and water jets at high temperatures and pressures, joining the OnePlus 13, Moto G Power and Honor Magic 7 Pro in applying strict standards that were restrictive until recently. to the bulkiest rugged phones. The 14 Pro is also rated IP68 for water resistance, with IP66 also for water jets but for higher volumes of water at lower pressures and over longer distances.

Other than that, both Realme phones are typical mid-range phones. They both come with a 50-megapixel main camera and mid-range chipsets, with the Pro Plus model equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 and the Pro model equipped with a MediaTek Dimensity 7300. However, the large 6000mAh battery and 80W charging speed are still impressive. Both phones are now available in India, with prices starting at 22,999 rupees (approximately $265).
