Rapper Tory Lanez was taken to hospital after being stabbed 14 times in a California prison.

Prison officials told the BBC that the Canadian hip-hop artist attacked another inmate Monday morning at the housing department of the California Correctional Institution, about 75 miles (120 kilometers) north of Los Angeles.

According to an article on his Instagram account, the 32-year-old rapper suffered a wound on his body - causing his two lungs to collapse.

Lanez's legal name is Daystar Peterson, who was sentenced to 10 years in prison for shooting musician Megan Thee's stallion.

The star's Instagram post said he was stabbed in the back, torso, head and face. The Instagram post added that he was temporarily placed on a respirator but is now able to breathe on his own.

"In spite of the pain, he spoke normally, was refreshed and deeply thanked God who he was working on."

Pedro Calderón Michel of the state's correctional department said the attack occurred around 07:20 local time.

Prison staff began first aid before Lannis was taken to a local medical facility for further treatment, he said.

Calderón Michel told the BBC that an investigation is underway. He did not comment on the attacker's motivation.

Lanez was sentenced in 2023 on three felony firearm charges, including assault with a semi-automatic firearm.

He shot and killed Megan Thee's stallion, whose legal name is Megan Pete, as they were leaving the pool party at the Hollywood mansion of reality TV star Kylie Jenner.

The two argued in the car during the trial about their previous sexual relationships and careers.

She said she had asked to drop the car from the vehicle when Lannis began shooting on the ground and shouted "dance" at her.

She needs surgery to remove bullet fragments from her feet.

Lannis refused to apologize and remained innocent in the shooting.

The case divides the hip-hop world into conflict with rappers, including 50 Cent and Iggy Azalea. Some of them wrote to the court asking Lannis for sentencing leniency.

In the seven years before his conviction, Lannis had seven top ten albums in the United States. He laughed at the release of a new album released in Peterson.
