PHILADELPHIA — Less than an hour after the Los Angeles Rams lost 28-22 to the Philadelphia Eagles in the divisional round of the playoffs on Sunday, quarterback Matthew Stafford was asked about his future in the NFL.
Stafford glanced at his watch and noted that the game wasn't over for long and that he would "take some time to think about it."
"But I thought I played pretty well," Stafford said.
Asked if he still had football left, he said: "Of course it feels like there is."
Stafford has two years left on his contract, a year he and the Rams have worked hard to adjust into training camp this season. Rams head coach Sean McVay declined to answer postgame questions Sunday about Stafford's future, saying: "I'm not interested in talking about anything related to next year."
"I appreciate this team right now," McVay said.
After the loss, McVay spoke emotionally from the podium about his love for this Rams team that went from 1-4 into the bye week and then won its next 11 games. 9 games and won the NFC West Championship.
The longtime Rams coach said the loss to the Eagles — in which the Rams trailed by 13 points with 4:47 left but were down six points and in scoring position at the end of the game — “showed Team Resilience" The team's "courage, ability to overcome adversity" this season.
When he spoke, McVay said he was "devastated" because he and everyone in the locker room "didn't see it any other way than we won that game 29-28."
"Everyone in the locker room, we believe in (Stafford) wholeheartedly," wide receiver Puka Nakua said. "It's a great feeling to go out and know that your quarterback is willing to give it his all and he has the ability to make a play whenever he's needed. We have a lot of confidence in our No. 9."
Stafford completed 26 of 44 passes for 324 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. He did turn the ball over twice, losing one in the fourth quarter. Stafford now has 15 touchdown passes for the Rams in the playoffs, tying Kurt Warner for the most in franchise history, according to ESPN Research .
The Rams had a chance to score and add an extra point to take the lead, with 1:19 remaining at the Philadelphia 21 on first down. Stafford's fourth-down drive fell incomplete after a false start, a 10-yard completion and a sack on third down that resulted in a loss of 9 yards.
"We had every opportunity to win that game at the end," McVay said. "We're a few games away and I'm happier now... I'm happy to be a part of this team and proud of this team. I'm really bummed that this journey is over".
Stafford suffered a rib injury during the game, an injury he said he's been dealing with "to varying degrees for a while" but that he aggravated early in the game. Stafford said he was "able to calm down a little bit" and "didn't feel like it was a big factor in the game."
"He got the ribs early," McVay said. "He's hurt. But he's a fighter. He's very tough. He represents a lot of the right things about this team, especially for a city that's hurting and going through some different things.
"I think he embodies a lot of qualities that suit him, like toughness, toughness, the ability to overcome adversity. He's a macho man through and through. I thought he did a great job tonight and he got the opportunity... I really So proud of Matthew Stafford.”
While Stafford said he hasn't made any decisions about his future, he reflected on the end of the game when he talked about when he might next play.
“There was a chance, but it didn’t happen,” Stafford said. "But I love competing. I love being in those moments. Certainly not afraid of them. I competed as hard as I could, but today didn't go the way I wanted. Next time I'm out there, line it up and we'll do it again Bar."
